I'm not a GM but play on the PC lol. It might seem harsh but here's what I think the 9ers will or should do with AF.

Franchise him again next year, the let him watd should be close to fully developed by then.

Or just let AF walk next year and hand it over to RJF. You can tell the 9ers don't really wanna commit to long term relationship with AF anyway, they would have re'upped him like they did other key members. Think about it, they are always calling him the key to the D but yet the didn't do a long term deal with him when his contract is up?

This is the NFL, you gotta be shrewd.......

As many have said before, why dump that much money in a 30 year old DT that has never made a pro bowl/all pro? He's a damn good player, but not great. Not deserving of the kind of money he wants, IMO.
One thing must be factored in is that Franklin is not 30 years old in terms of playing time. During his years in Baltimore, he almost never saw the field. He was third string there. He didn't start to get regular playing time until he came here. Consequently he will be a four year veteran in terms of actual playing time.

It really comes down to the 49ers wanting to keep this guy but need to see him perform at the same high level two years in a row. So if he plays this season as well as last, he can expect a nice contract. However, if he does not come close to last year, they will either let him walk or sign him to a lower number. In either case, Franklin should have a terrific season as his entire future rests on his good play this year.

49ers have played this one well, and now have his replacement in house if Franklin leaves or plays poorly.
^^^ DTs can also play pretty late into their 30s (Williams is what, 37?).

I think Francois is really the wild card here. We can't resign all of our FAs, and IMO who we choose to resign is largely dependent on where we have the replacements. Davis is really the only upcoming FA who is probably guaranteed to be on the team next year.

Terrel Brown's play somewhat dictates if Clements gets cut or restructures.
Reggie Smith's play somewhat dictates if Goldson gets resigned.
Ahmad Brooks play somewhat dictates if Lawson gets resigned.
Heitman's ability to come back from injury somewhat dictates if Baas gets resigned.
Same deal for Franklin and Francois.
