Aubrayo Franklin still hasn't signed his franchise tender, but is expected to soon
Posted by Mike Florio on August 13, 2010 9:45 PM ET
We mentioned earlier today (maybe it was yesterday) that the Kentwan Balmer fiasco in San Francisco would be getting a lot more attention if the Niners were the subjects of this years edition of Hard Knocks.

But without the ever-present cameras and given the absence of a look-at-me head coach (along with that good ol' East Coast bias), the 49ers haven't gotten much attention.

Indeed, most have forgotten that defensive tackle Aubrayo Franklin isn't in camp, because he hasn't signed his franchise tender.

Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that Franklin is expected to sign the tender soon. Because he's not under contract, Franklin is subject to no fines or other penalties. If he shows up by Week 1, Franklin will receive his full base salary of $7.003 million.
good to hear, we need Aubrayo in 2010.

Our D-Line in 2010:

Justin Smith, McDonald
Aubrayo Franklin, RJF
Isaac Sopoaga, Demetric Evans
OTB
finally some good news in niner land.

One thing that stood out to me last year while watching RJF was his raw strength. I don't know if he is big enough to be a classic NT but he sure has the strength.

I really hope he plays well in the preseason at NT, that would be a huge boost for us.

We badly need to upgrade our depth along the DL. We still have not addressed our NT need, and really must find another balanced End who can fit both the roles that Smith and Sopoaga play.
Figured it was just a matter of time...His a$$ just better be ready to play this year and then he will get the long term deal that he deserves...

I think we're good at RDE w/Smith and McD DT if Franklin has another good year and we can sign him then we're good there. RDE needs an upgrade I'm not that high on Sopoaga.
Good news! And speaking of Hard Knocks, I thought we'd be seeing our team for sure in 2010 at this time last year. I suppose after the offseason we're currently enduring, they won't have any choice but to make us the center piece of their show next season [Well, if we even have a football season.]
We all saw it coming (and we weren't really worried), he just wanted to dodge the nutcracker, and I think he'll be better for it (otherwise he'd be injured like the rest right now).

I can't say I really blame him. He'll get paid anyhow as long as he shows up later. Although, if his play is affected because he didn't train well enough while away from camp then he deserves to DIE!
Yeah, no kidding. Training Camp is almost over.

Why? Hes a big part of our run defense and improved pass rush. He does just as much as Franklin in freeing other guys. He more than fits the prototype 3-4 DE and imho gives us a very good front 3. I think you would find it very hard to find a LDE like Soap right now. With RJF and Mitchell im not to concerned with DL depth right now. Our depth at OLB is a much bigger concern imho.
hopefully he doesn't up and quit after he gets his money

Franklin will be very motivated to play well this season. If he doesn't, he not only gives up and chance for big money in FA, but likely any chance the 49ers re-sign him. I'm sure his agent has stressed that very well, if Franklin was not already aware of the critical nature of this upcoming season.

I think we can all relax about A Franklin.
