I'm not trying to rag on Alex Smith, but what exactly do you expect a coach to say about a QB that he decided to stick with instead of exploring other options via the draft or free agency?
I'm not trying to call you out or anything but its this double standard that annoys me.
If Smith gets an obvious rave review from his coaches ("...light years ahead from a year ago...taking leadership...different guy..." Not just "yeah he's doing ok...coming along nicely...doing what he needs to do..." Big difference)...then its just "oh the coaches are just SAYING that. When he gets a bad report here and there from reporters its..."Well see...we should have explored free agency."
In order for it to be a double-standard, it would have to be a level playing field in terms of who's quotes you're dealing with. A coach's comments will never be anything bad about a player they've put all their stock in. You cannot argue with this. A reporter, however, really has no connection to the player, therefor they will usually tell it like they see it. Now, if a reporter said a player is doing great and you didn't believe him, but as soon as the reporter said the player is looking bad, you start to believe him, THAT'S a double-standard.
I would never expect Singletary to do anything but praise his starting QB (NO MATTER WHO IT IS). And like I said, it's only one practice and not that big of a deal, but retaliating with a "Coach Sing has been praising him" response is useless, in my opinion. What else is he going to say? Seriously. Does anybody really expect him to say "Yeah, he's been coming along, but not as nicely as we'd hoped.."? THAT'll be good for the team and great for the fans to hear, right? Even if it were the truth, he still wouldn't say it. A reporter, however, might and probably would.
