Balmer is No-Show, Future Uncertain
SANTA CLARA -- Defensive end Kentwan Balmer, the 49ers' first-round draft pick in 2008, was not on the 49ers' practice field Wednesday morning, and his future with the club appears tenuous.
Coach Mike Singletary granted Balmer a two-day leave to deal with a personal matter. Balmer was expected to return to practice Wednesday.
Balmer's agent, Gary Wichard, told Comcast SportsNet on Tuesday that Balmer was dealing with family matters. Balmer has yet to comment publicly on his situation.
Balmer been a disappointment in his first two NFL seasons, and figured to be in a battle to earn a roster spot this season.
When he left the team, Balmer was not among the 49ers' top defensive linemen behind presumptive starters Isaac Sopoaga, Justin Smith and Aubrayo Franklin. He also appears to be situated behind Ray McDonald, Ricky Jean-Francois, Demetric Evans and, perhaps, Khalif Mitchell on the depth chart.
