If Smith plays like an average QB this year, then we scrape into the playoffs or miss out by a game or two. And even if we make it into the playoff, it will be a short visit.
But, on the other hand, if he elevates his game into the upper half of the league, then there is a chance we go deep in the playoffs. If he excels his play to top 8, then we are SB contenders. So I just hope that the team stays healthy, they keep working hard, they prepare extensively, and the play hard for the brother next to them. If they can do this, then the sky is the limit. We all just need to support them and be the best fans in the NFL. They need that from us.

I see it more like if Smith plays average yet is extremely accurate and precise with his throws, then we should be a top 6 NFC team. If he plays above average in terms of individual stats but missing key throws here and there "leaving plays on the field" as he says it, then we will not be that much better.
Gore is the key for us to reach potential. Smith being precise on his throws is the different between 9 wins and 11 wins.

I'll be happy with 9 wins!

We finally get a true picture of what the Niners Brass REALLY think about Alex Smith (not what they put out for media consumption).
When ESPN was interviewing Trent Baalke at camp(I think it was Mort?) ,Baalke said about Alex...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm not saying Alex Smith is a great quarterback in the NFL, but if we protect him and we've surrounded him with the right kind of players, put him in the right system and stay out of all the third-and-8s that we had last year, then he'll be just fine.:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is and has been my opinion about Alex in 2010. He won't be anything special in the NFL BUT if we don't ask him to do too much, then the team around him can make up for his shortcomings. The REAL truth emerges ! I wonder if Baalke is in trouble for telling it like it is ,instead of trying to build up Alex's confidence ?

I think it was implied that he meant "I'm not saying Alex Smith is a great quarterback (right now) in the NFL." I didn't get the impression that he felt that he was a low-ceiling type player. If that was the case we wouldn't have stuck with him this long, and we probably would have been strongly pursuing someone like McNabb this off-season.

Every QB in the league will do fine if their offense stays out of 3rd and 8s. Its a definite vague politics.
Football is more than just the QB. If the O-line is getting a good push, then the running game will benefit, which in turn alleviates the 3rd and long situations. Less 3rd and longs means more scoring drives, which means less time for the defense to be on the field.
So in summary, a total team improvement due to familiarity and continuity will help all aspects of the game and take some of the pressure off of Alex.
But if the game is close and they need a scoring drive to end a game... That's where Alex needs to step up.

Smith is a hack until he proves otherwise.

The bold is true but a QB is what makes a 12 to 14 win team over a team who ranges from 8 to 10 wins year in and year out.
This is my main concern about how Alex Smith will perform and the future of this team. If he is average, then we are looking at being in the playoffs yet repeatedly being knocked out of the playoffs. Then, once we lose a piece around him (Gore can only play for so many years) then we go right back to that 7 to 9 win mark.

Or they might have picked up Carr ,and drafted young talent at the QB spot for the last two years to prepare for the possibility that alex will never be anything special in the NFL ! Yes,they stuck with alex, but they have a solid plan B and C in place because they have great doubt, like almost all the fans and experts do. In past years they had alex and nothing behind him. Now they have a veteran who was also a 1st round QB and they have two your QB's with great natural talent to become the future of the team if Alex faulters again.
