There's no reason to play him.
Running backs have a finite number of carries in them before production dries up. Why waste the carries in preseason?

I am okay with 1 series a game, but I don't think he needs that much. I would like to see if Coffee's new weight has helped or how Dixon will do...

I'd play him as little as possible, but I bet he sits out one game, gets a series each in two games, and plays a couple series in Week 3.

no preseason for Gore, he is a proven veteran who is injury prone. Coffee & Dixon take the load, whichever comes out alive, is number #2.

I don't know if I'm more frustrated that Gore misses 2-3 games every season with a bum ankle, or the fact that we don't have a very good back up RB.
Gore's durability isn't really an issue when compared to other Running Backs in the NFL. He's missed no more than two games in each of the last two seasons and just seven starts in four years.

I believe Gore should play the first series of every preseason game except for the last game.

He won't be playing at all; practically (maybe 1 offensive series for the first 3 pre-season games and that's it). It's gonna be the Dixon show until Seattle.

I think our 8-8 team could still benefit from all the reps possible. I would like to see our 1st string to play the entire first half of the first 3 games and the sit the last to freshen up

6-8 series should be enough. I'd also like to see us pick up someone who can turn the corner. We only play at one speed. Too easy for defenses to shut down.

Thats why offseason reps are so important. Yeah are team is 8-8 and yeah I think that's mediocre. But they get lot of practice and reps in when they aren't in preseason game. I think All starters plus Coffee/Dixon wouldn't hurt the offense as a whole.

1st game - 1-2 carries
2nd game - 1-2 carries
3rd game - 1 series
4th game - inactive
though honestly, there's no real reason to play him

As much as we need to protect him, he isn't going to be happy if he can't establish some kind of game rhythm.

I agree completely. This is exactly what I think they should do with Gore.
The PO listed answers are insufficient, because you cannot just say he should play one series a game, since the third preseason game is different than all the rest of them.

That will likely be the way it plays out, and gets my vote also.
