Just interesting offseason stuff.
Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders has put together an interesting piece for Insider looking at the NFL's best and worst tacklers.
Tackles are an unofficial stat because their interpretation is subjective, but most of us know a missed tackle when we see one.
The Seattle Seahawks' Jordan Babineaux and the San Francisco 49ers' Dashon Goldson ranked among the 12 worst in missed tackles.
The 49ers' Patrick Willis was the best tackler among linebackers, no surprise if you've watched him play. The Arizona Cardinals' Karlos Dansby, now with the Miami Dolphins, was also among the best. The Cardinals' Adrian Wilson ranked among the best tacklers at defensive back. The Seahawks' Patrick Kerney and the 49ers' Justin Smith were the only defensive linemen to record at least 40 tackles without missing one.
Kerney, as a 4-3 defensive end, was measured by how well he rushed the passer. He was a very sound tackler, however, and probably didn't get enough credit for that.

Goldson's issues with tackles up the side of the field was one of the most masked gripes of the season (amongst his mid-field coverage/tacking success). -Which possibly explains why Singletary is going to use hybrid/multi-use strong/free-safeties to stretch the backfield/confuse the confidence of opposing offenses.

Not surprising to me. I feel that Goldson is sorely over-hyped on this board.

I agree with you, I think he is better suited to be a SS, but I guess the coaching staff know where he is best suited to play.

Maybe Goldson should pay close attention when thecoaches are teaching Mays how to tackle. He might learn a thing or two.

Sign Atogwe when he likely becomes a free agent, develop Mays behind Goldson. Let Goldson and his inflated sense of self worth out the door after next year and have Reggie Smith, and Mays and that guy we drafted out of LSU last year (blanking on the name at the moment) compete for the job next year.
Unless Goldson suddenly morphs into a top flight safety, let him walk. The guy obviously wants to be paid like a top 5 safety and the last thing we can afford to do is tie up our salary cap paying mediocre at best players pools of money.

agreed ATG, I dont buy Goldson right now as a top flight FS, I think he has a future, but im also worried about his tackling.
And Curtis Taylor is the LSU S we drafted, I can see him or Reggie Smith being a big part of the future.
I say Sign Atogwe for 1 yr or 2 yr deal, then see who performs.
If atogwe out performs goldson, then their ya go, we re-sign Atogwe and let Goldson go. Very very possible IMO.

obviously it was his FIRST YEAR playin almost a full season, he did very well, he was sat on the bench under Nolan's DUMBA**, for years for no F'N reason.....yea he misses tackles okay so wat he is feared, came into his own at the end of the season, began making HUGE PLAYS, and intercepting the ball even, IN HIS FIRST FULL SEASON IN THE NFL AT SAFETY, the niners have bunch of haters everywhere, definately dont need em to be SUPPOSED FANS OF THE TEAM!!!!!!! Wise up he needs to be given an above average contract not ridiculous but above average!!!!! PATRICK, MAYS, GOLDSON, who wants to go over the middle, we have the best MLB, and too of the most feared safeties in the game, and one of em is a ROOKIE with alot to learn but will become GREAT because the other two will make it easier for him....LETS GO NINERS!!!!

So what if he didnt play during nolan yrs, that was what 1 yr, he was a 2007 pick, Nolan was fired the following yr. And Above Average in what terms? 5M a yr, he hasnt earned it, simple.
He has to step it up and prove he can stay healthy, and improve on his tackling, I dont want two hitters at S, rather have 1 hitter and 1 good coverage guy.
Mays isnt a coverage guy, and Goldson is subpar, so Im all for extending Goldson, but not at 5M-7M a yr that he wants.

Goldson is developing into a star. Similarly to Vernon Davis who drops a pass or two Goldson has other very strong attributes(range, ball skills, and hard hits) that outweigh a pretty obvious negative fundamental, tackling. Hes gotten better ever year and I can only see injuries as to why that wouldn't continue.
