I don't think it is Patrick Willis because he is a very quite and subdued individual. You don't see him doing a lot of commercials or other kind of sponsor related activities. Further, he has a helmet on on Sundays, which makes him less recognizable to the public.
Everyone knows Singletary because he is very vocal and has made some lasting impressions with public relations (I want winners... don't tell me, show me, etc. etc.). Also, on Sundays, the coach doesn't wear a helmet so he is a face everyone is constantly seeing and associating with the Niners, especially if you aren't a fan. Not to mention that Singletary is quite excited and pumped up on the sideline, which makes him even more apparent (remember when Singletary sent VD to the showers?).

Well, when you think about what a "face of the franchise" is, you have to consider people who aren't 49er fans, but football fans -- what comes to their mind when they hear the team name. For example, when someone hears the name "Ravens," they think Ray Lewis; or, when you hear the name "Colts," you think Peyton Manning; Jets = Rex Ryan; Dolphins = Bill Parcels; Raiders = Al Davis...etc. etc.
No one questions that Willis is the best and most talented 49er, but he just seems to blend into the background because he tends to avoid the spotlight and is soft-spoken and doesn't seem to have an outgoing personality.

Willis has been voted to the probowl every year he has been in the league. The NFL fans have spoken!
