C'mon, Alex has been in the league at least 16 years.

Dlinemen take a few years to develop, esp in a 3-4 because it's so different than what most colleges run. Being injured hasn't helped his progression, but mentally this is the year he should understand what he's supposed to do in this system. Physically he has what you want in a 3-4 DE. If by the end of this season he isn't a contributing player, then maybe we can call him a bad pick. He just needs to stay healthy and get some snaps.

Looks like he owned a completely in shape and strong Alex Boone:
T Alex Boone struggled in the nutcracker. He wound up on the ground against both Kentwan Balmer and Justin Smith, and OLB Parys Haralson slipped past him on a combo.

and his milkshake...from way over there?
Balmer was coming on strong last year when he was injured and placed on IR. I remember him knocking down balls at the line and even tackling ball carriers for a loss etc.
He is nowhere near a bust at this point in his career, since it usually takes at least 2-3 years before you know what you have in a D lineman. He has missed significant time because of injury and if he had not missed any time and had not been held back by nolan in his first year from any playing time (as Nolan often did with rookies),then this would be Balmer's year to show what he is all about.
IMHO I think Balmer will at least be a quality member of the D line rotation. He might be a lot more than that,we will see.

He was coming on during pre-season last year... it's surprisingly how few people noticed it. I don't really know why people blame the player for McClueless overdrafting him. He is gonna be a solid contributor, also remember he was a late first round pick, not a top-ten. I would be more pissed if his name was Glenn Dorsey.

Or Vernon Gholston
Or Jamal Anderson
I think a major reason for all the Balmer Hate is that the Niners have 4 or 5 D-lineman that are better than him. Therefore, he is backup.
Aubrayo Franklin was buried in Baltimore's depth chart before he came out here. Not because he wasn't talented, but because they had ALOT of better talent on the team.

Takes 3 years to determine if a player is a bust (unless you saw Drunkenmiller play)so ask me at the end of the 2010 season.

Balmer is just 23yrs old,has been with the team for 2 going on 3 yrs,was injured the second half last year and didn't play the rest of the season and also is playing behind a lineup that is tough to crack and you want everybody to agree he's bust?
He's young and has potential, that is what the 49ers see(especially Manusky)and that is why he's on the roster and that is what matters, period.
