It takes a long time to establish an offense - if you don't have a QB to build it around. We've heard that our O-Coord is really good at building an Offense around his QBs. I have a sneaky suspicion that we will see a lot of West Coast type plays worked into our Offense this season.
The two systems aren't "mutually exclusive. Besides naming conventions, we can easily work many/most WCO plays into our current offense. This would help Alex too, but I think it's geared towards our running game, and Carr...
Remember - Carr is a WCO QB. He was drafted as such. The Houston team he played with tried hard to get it working - but they were an expansion team with no talent around him. They finally got a RB a couple of seasons ago, but by that time his confidence was gone in the organization and the talent around him, and perhaps himself.
I see his signing as similar to the Steve Young signing (not saying he's as good as Young), but, of course, there isn't a HOFer in front of him. Regardless, I think this is a good move.
Would love to see the WCO back...!!!
A fine example of pretzel logic!

No I do not think that Carr being signed as a backup means that they would be bringing back the WCO. If they were, Shaun Hill would probably be better suited to it than Carr.
The OC knowledge/experience is based on the original West Coast office system developed by Sid Gilman. In a nutshell it is a down field passing attack based on a power running game and play action passing.
While we had better QB performance once we went to the spread format, it was not based on the WCO.
Bottomline, Carr was brought in because he has a stronger arm than Hill. Hence, if something should happen to the starting QB you don't have to change the entire offense to fit the QB.
Get used to it. Raye is based in the digit system, and Singletary likes power running game. The WCO doesn't blend that well with this mentality.
To me, it's pure logic.
Just wanted to add that whether you like how we have drafted/filled positions in FA,
this team is built with larger, less mobile lineman that are more geared towards a power running and play action game. Think Dallas of the early 90s.

I'm all for bringing back the WCO but I'm afraid it won't happen until the current offensive coordinator is replaced and probably the head coach as well. After Singletary fired Martz I was hoping he would go back to it but unfortunately we got Raye instead. Now, for better or worse, we're stuck with him.
That being said, Raye can always sprinkle in plays from the WCO, such as the famous "Sprint right option", an old Paul Brown play, which, by the way, was directly responsible for "The Catch". Hostler attempted to do just that but unfortunately did not have the talent or vision to make it work.
Alex Smith showed promise when using bootlegs and quarterback options, so I think a few plays from the WCO could be beneficial. We'll see in the preseason if Raye sees the same things.

Just a thought, but if we fail to make the play-offs yet again, even when we are the obvious favorites, Singletary probably will be fired and guess who's available and is a WCO coach with a Superbowl ring?
That's right...
Gruden!!!
