There will be obvious differences (the money Rolle was guaranteed anyway from being released would be one) and also a more proven track record.
Rolle played well in 2008 & 2009. Goldson just completed his first season as a starter after a history with injuries prevented him from being on the field. Goldson is seen as an up and comer but Rolle I think is more viewed as a proven player in this league.
I do believe that he will get re-signed this year similar to what happened with Frank Gore the year he signed his extension. It won't I think Gore got his the same time LT and others were getting almost twice as much.
I would see a 5 year $25 million type deal for Goldson maybe $30 million but we'll see. I think it'll get done but after reading Goldson's twitter comment's I had the exact same worry.

With Rolle breaking the bank, will we have to pay Goldson the same?

Goldson played well for most of the season, put IMO he has not proven he deserves the money that Rolle received in his contract with the Giants...........

A. Rolle: Tackles - 61 Solo 11 Assists, 72 total Rank - 23rd among DB. 4 Int's rank: T-5th among S, 12 Pdef 1.5 sacks.
D. Goldson: Tackles - 76 Solo, 18 Assists, 94 Total Rank - 4th among DB. 4 Int's rank: T-5th among S, 10 PDef, 2.0 Sacks.
By comparison Goldson had 33 more tackles, .5 more sacks, =Int's and 2 less passes defensed.
Rolle just became the highest paid safety every.... How can we not pay Goldson after such a comparible season?

He won't get that kind of contract unless he becomes the Jesus Shuttlesworth of football.

Rolle has a few seasons under his belt as a solid player right?
Goldson has ONE. That's it. I like the kid, but no way you can compare the numbers and justify giving him similar green.

I don't think Goldson is in a position to command that type of contract after 1 decent season. If he can not only duplicate, but improve on last season, he might just be worth the money. I don't know about highest paid Safety ever money, but maybe serious dough.
Hmmm...Rolle did it after a decent 2009. If you look at the Cardinals boards, they complainted about Rolle ALOT for his inability to cover and tackle. Anyway, it's a joke that he even got that much money.
Rolle has been consistent as a starter for 3 years. That's why I think they threw the money at him. Like I said, If Goldson can duplicate and improve, he might be in a position to command some big money. But he's not at that level just yet.

Yippers. Rolle has steadily improved since being moved to FS. Goldson needs to show consistency, and I know he wants an extension this year but he needs to prove his worth for that extension. Money should never be handed in chunks to a guy who has 1 good year under his belt.
At any rate Goldson is an RFA after this year so if we can't get an extension done and he continues to improve we hold good leverage by slapping him with a 1st round tender if need be.

Pro Bowl? Don't you mean all-world. There's always some team that overpays and another team the underpays, still gets better and continues to be a force in the playoffs. Big money doesn't always mean big plays.
Sounds like Patriots.

Always thought Rolle was a fairly good safety, but I think they wayyy overpaid for the guy. You can thank no cap for that. I would not be suprised if the contract is frontloaded to give a bulk of the money this year...

You guys are in denial. Goldson will get that much money next year. I'm sure of it.
Especially after we make the playoffs and Goldson gets hyped up.

My point in starting this post was not as much in saying that Goldson SHOULD get the same amount of money but, this is a "what have you done for me lately?" league. It's not about if you have performed in the past(unless you're the Jets) but how did you perform last year/this year? Rolle's agent is Drew Rosenhaus, same agent as Goldson, how are we gonna get away with not paying Goldson? Rolle just set the new market for Safeties. Just like the market gets set in the draft. It's displaying that with the way the game is played today, it's no longer corners who are gonna get paid big, it's safeties. To get a shut down corner is extremely rare and less valuable. But a solid safety is very valuable. Think of all the playoff teams, we mention their QB's but they all had quality safeties.
Now, if a pro bowl safety is up for re-signing or free agency, he's gonna expect bigger and better deals than Rolle's 5 yr 37 mil 22.5 guarenteed.
P.S. someone posted that Rolle's is probably front loaded, it is. average of 9 mil a year for the first 3 years.

You're on Fantasy Island.
Goldson MAY get that kind of deal after this coming season.
Or he most likely will not, because the league will probably reinstall the Cap by the time both sides go to the bargaining table.
Now go get me another Mai Tai Tattoo, and make sure they use the 151. Last time they used the Barcardi Lite shizit and it gave me the runs. Vamanos.

Can't set a new market for ANY position this year. Capless.
There is NO telling how the talks go and whether or not or how quickly the Cap is reintalled.
So they could pay a guy 100 mil 1st year contract and it wouldn't set the new mark for anybody. Regardless of how good they may or may not be.
