Linebacker Ahmad Brooks, a bust from the 2006 supplemental draft who has made the most of his second chance in San Francisco, won't be leaving the Bay Area just yet.
Brooks is a restricted free agent, and the 49ers have decided to apply to him a second-round tender, according to David White of the San Francisco Chronicle.
To preserve Brooks' rights at that level, the Niners were required to offer him a one-year, $1.759 million contract.
Per White, the team and Brooks had been discussing a long-term deal, but the talks were unsuccessful and have since ended.

HavenĀ“t seen it posted yet, so here it goes:
The article says they could not agree on an extension and the negotiationes are supposedely closed for now, so he got the tender. Under the tender he will make about 1,7 million this year and could negotiate a deal with another team and the Niners have the option to match it. If they do not match it, they would get a second-round pick.
Still, I hope he and Niners can figure out something long-term, I think he has potential

The sky is the limit for Brooks and it would suck if we lose him. He should develop into a more consistent pass rusher after this full year at the position.

He is not yet an every down player... he is basically a pass rush specialist that showed flashes this season. It's not time to break the bank on this guy.
Let's see if he can build on the promise he showed last season..

the problem is assessing his value. he has potential, that's obvious. But the difference is he might value himself as a top rush OLB, where the team just sees the potential. getting both sides to meet in the middle isn't the problem, its defining what that middle actually is.

I pray this guy gets an offer from another team and we get a 2nd rounder for him. He did well last year but he is not an every down player and last time he had a good year with the Bengals he was out of football the year after. If we got a 2nd for him we could sign Alex Baron, RFA OT from the Rams, to a big deal to play tackle for us which would only cost a 2nd rounder and then draft one of the OLB with one of our 2 first rounders. It wont happen but I wish someone would sign this guy cause thats like trading a UDFA for a 2nd round pick.
I like Brooks but I will take a 2nd rounder in this years draft for him any day.
