What do you think we would need to do to win it all next year?

Well, what do the actual Superbowl participants have that makes them successful?

1. Great QBs. Very rarely does even an average QB win it all.

2. Great offensive scheme that gets the best out of the players.

3. Defense. The offenses rule these days, but a great defense can get that one crucial stop and maybe a turnover. In a 37-30 game, it still can be the better D that allows only the 30.

4. Coaching is basically simple (but not easy): identify and play the best players, play them at their best positions, utilize schemes and techniques that they are best at. This gets down to the nitty-gritty of OL blocking techniques, particular pass patterns and such.

5. Front office decisions. Got to have the players, everything else depends on that. Draft, trade, sign, release, salary caps and all that. The coaches are part of the process, but the front office is who gets it done, or not.

6. Ownership. Being an owner is a big and important job. They have to be rich, above all, so that the money part isn't an issue. Then they can concentrate on hiring the best front office people and subsequently the best coaches.

They have to be a positive force in the community, a father figure to some of the players and be successful in getting a proper facility to play in (which makes it easier to get good employees).

They can't be like ** ***** and mess everything up.

So, how do the Niners stack up here? At or near the top in any category?

Great post.

And in my opinion we can have the starting o-line from the NFC Pro Bowl, but with A.Smith at QB, we're still an 8-8 team.

And please don't mistake this for Smith bashing.

If it quacks like a duck...
Rapid4 pretty much had it cold: draft starting OT, then burn 2nd pick on starting OG. Then FA an all pro OL (either C,G, or T). That's right, three starting OLinemen, and any deficiencies in alex will be a thing forgotten.

Additionally, we still need that Dwight FReeny DE (or OLB) and we need a DB(CB would be best, but whoever it is has to be a starter)

The hackneyed PR and KR ---yeah, we need 'em. If Coffee isn't the next coming, then we need a starting RB

Lastly and most important, we can be good , but can never go above 9-10 wins until the popular but woefully 2nd tier HC is changed to a HC who also is an OC. Then and only then will this team have a shot , and 2nd, have continuity. It is a thing of beauty to see Peyton and tom moore, Brees and sean Payton, Brady and bellichek. Until we get a real HC who is a redhot OC, we won't be seeing any glory. Good play, sure, but glory no. Sorry bigmike, as much as i like and respect you, we don't make the jump to great team/ SB contender, until bigMike is replaced by a great OC who becomes our HC. Big mike got hyper jumped to HC when he should have been promoted to DC...also should have had experience coaching OL, OC, DBs, ST, WRs...well, you get the idea.

that is the most retarded thing ive ever heard. a change of pace back is not going to make a huge impact.

what one thing could take us all the way? two words: alex smith. he's the starter. if he can play at a pro bowl level, we could definitly make it to the super bowl. we are a qb away. we have the defense. we have the rb. we have the receivers- VD and crabs. we just need the qb to step it up.

we are that close. in this years draft, if we can grab a tackle, a db, and a return man, and our qb steps it up considerably, there should be no reason not to win it all.

"retarded", would be your comment. The Niners need a change up at RB so bad.. Oh, and what about our super sucking return game? Ever thought about that?

BTW- No SB for quite a while. Only extreme homers would think this team could go, especially with "Saint A Smith" @ QB. Get a grip fer heavens sake....!!

I say just OL. Niners are pretty good in CB.
~ New Owner.
~ New Head Coach.
~ New Offensive Coordinator.
~ Better Offensive scheme.
~ New Safety.
~ Better Corners.
~ Elite Pass Rusher.
~ Better WR's. Crabtree is it. And it's a huge dropoff after him. Plus he is not fast.
~ Better KR.
~ Better PR.
~ Better Special Teams coach.
~ Better RT.
~ Better LG.
~ Better RG.
~ Better QB play whoever the QB ends up being.
~ Less PEP RALLY Timeouts and use them when it really matters in a game.
~ Coaching instead of Pep Rally's.

Score more points than the teams we play.

We actually need all these before we can win. We are further away than people think.

We need a philosophy for offense that can be followed to acquire players through free agency and the draft. It also gives a more clear idea of whom to sign or cut. A continuity from OTA's through the entire season would improve performance. For example, OC and quarterback, QB > WR, QB>OL, and offensive line men to each other.

I think that in order to win it all next year we need to make the playoffs and then go undefeated in them

We either need the kind of defense that the Ravens had when they won or we have no shot with Smith at the helm.

You seemed to divide issues that could have been summed up with one point instead of six to make your argument seem more valid (or more like a laundry list). A new OC would most likely bring with him a new scheme, so no need to list both on here. Same with other issues. Just say better ST and not "New ST coach, new PR, new KR.

You always beat a dead horse and want to make us seem worse than we really are. I'm already skeptical enough of this team and I already want to give them less credit than they deserve. You just go above and beyond that for what seems to be a need for attention.

In truth, your list is excessive and flawed. A better QB (or better QB play), an OL man or two, new face in the secondary and game-breaker like Spiller who could handle RB and return duties would have this team sitting very pretty. Hell, take one of those needs off of my list and we'd still have a very good squad.

Stop being overly negative for the sake of spotlight, it really gets tiring. If you're not seeking attention then please find a new team to root for. Who enjoys rooting for a team that they ceaselessly and excessively bash?
