With that kind of money, he could buy some bigger shoulder pads. Does he even wear any?

I swear, it always looks like he wearing a pee-wee shoulder pad set.

Guys, you realize we have 52 million in cap space, and most likely we wont have a cap next year. So lets say we tag him for 7 Million dollars...we'd still have 45 MILLION DOLLARS IN CAP SPACE. 8 million of that cap goes towards our rookie pool..soo

52 MILLION IN CAP
-7 MILLION for the Franchise Tag
-8 million for rookie pool
-----------
37 MILLION DOLLARS TO SPEND ON F.A.!

so whats the complaining about? Pay the man the 7 million dollars, there is a good chance we go into the 2010 season with over 25 millon in cap space.

We still have to extend a few guys....and by guys I mean key guys a la Willis and Davis and a few more.

True, but since this will only be a 1-year thing, I don't have any issues about it.

Hopefully Balmer will learn a thing or two and be ready to take over for Franklin next year if Franklin does not agree to a reasonably sized contract.

like what DeFaro said, we would have 52M so their is enough space, now of course their is no cap, but that doesnt mean we wont self impose one on ourselves like Pittsburgh is doing.

So, we can realsistically spend say 40M-45M on players this offseason. And still stay cap healthy for future yrs in case there is a new CBA and Cap in 2011 and beyond.

way to be positive! i never knew we had the best DT in the game?

As 3-4 NTs go, Franklin is easily top 3, and an argument can be made for him being the best.

The guy is always making plays, his technique is insane, he is a GREAT tackler, and the guy seems to be in position all the time, despite drawing a double team on almost every play.

Laugh all you want. James may have absolutely no clue when it comes to which baseball or hockey team to root for(sorry bro, I couldn't resist), but his post is spot on.
yes he's worth it!

And as for PWilly -- give him ANYTHING he wants.

Agree
yes
Spend the money and we have a top 10 defense next year. Top 5 in Run defense.

I hear ya man but he's only had 1 solid year & that was with us & it happened to be last year. I don't put allot of trust in stats especially players in their contract yr. He was in a 3-4 scheme in Baltimore. Never cracked the starting lineup. They brought in Haloti Ngata & the rest is history there. He is good don't get me wrong & i understand how the F.T. works, but I'd like to see us tag him & see if a team with a high draft pick goes after him then maybe package another pick & get McCoy from Oaklahoma.

But he is the best we got & we are thin on the o-line thanks to the crappy drafting of our GM! What's funny about the 06 draft is that on draft day there were the rumors of us trading up from 22 to 12. I always wonder how that would've panned out. Haloti Ngata was drafted at 12.

Anyways he's just never really produced. Yes he clogs the middle, and that's good, but I wouldn't put him in the top 3. Here's a list of the TOP DT/NT in a 3-4 IMO Where would he fit @ # 3???:
Haloti Ngata(plays DE to alot), Vince Wilfork, Albert Haynesworth (now in a 3-4) Casey Hampton,
I see all those guys above ahead of Franklin. Their proven yr in yr out.
Up & Comers: B.J. Raji, Amobi Okoye.

one good year people. one good year.

I hear ya . . . and it was a contract year. But we do need him in 2010. I think we should just franchise him again and make him repeat 2009 if he wants to get paid.

agreed. I just don't like the wording of the Post. Is he worth it? Nope. SHould we do it anyway? YES.

Hasn't he played like it since Nolan left? I thought that's when his game stepped up. And for people that say it was because of his contract year, well next year will still be his contract year so ya it's worth it
who the hell could get mad over 7mill for 1 year while his agent works on a 2-3 year contract for some nice change. Remember he was a back up in Balto and SF gave him his shot. You know, I'd do most any job for 7 mil/yr.

Never really produced???

The reason we are so good against the run has every thing to do with Franklin's play. Franklin has been kicking @ss since Sing took over and allowed Manusky to change the D to a straight one gap 3-4. The guy makes our D go. If you're wondering why our front 7 look so good...why Justin Smith draws single teams...why Patrick Willis is the best f*cking linebacker in the league...it's because he's freed up by the play of Aubrayo Franklin. That's not my opinion...its a fact.

Now to your list:

Ngata is an end, not a 3-4 NT.

Wilfork is good...but not as good as you think. Did you watch the Pats' D this season? Average at best, and the effectiveness of a 3-4 defense begins and ends with the NT.

Albert Haynesworth is an overrated, injury prone vagina. He is average at best...especially for what he's being paid.

Casey Hampton is good, but backsliding.

Raji and Okoye are up and comers, but neither is as effective as Franklin, and that just is what it is.

YEP! pay da man!
I think the theory is that he is worth way more than that if you let him hit the open market. Otherwise you would not franchise him.
