Playing and coaching are two different things. Rice embodied everything you would want a WR to be and just instinctively knew how to be a WR. Young talks about how he could read Rice moves and know what he was going to do does this mean Rice can teach that we don’t know?
What Rice would bring as a consultant/Asst. Coach is the work ethic, education and show them the little nuances on what makes a WR great. He could help keep VD and Crabtree humble while raising Morgan and Hills game to a whole new level. I bet Rice could walk on field even now and put moves on a CB that would have him tripping all over himself.
I strongly believe that the reason Jackson has done so well is the time he spent with Rice who showed him how to get off bumps from a CB, using his hands and eyes better, being more fluid and very precise in his route running. I am still pi$$ed we took Balmer over Jackson.

man Crabtree would dominate next year if Rice was his teacher
Would he really ?
Look I'd love for Rice to be involved with the organization in some way but I wouldn't go as far as start thinking he'll make players better. It's a 2 way street, he can share his knowledge with them but that knowledge does not translate to success. Knowledge is power.
I also would not go as far as to think he should replace any coaches on staff, he is inexperienced as a position coach and should start out as an assistant, likely to Jerry Sullivan.
Um, Jerry Rice... taking notes from Jerry Sullivan??? the man that can't teach our current receivers how to catch a ball? A pathetic excuse for a WR coach, having a HOF receiver underneath him??? um, ok
Yep. Why would we fire Sully for Rice ? Sully is a very respected and reputable coach in this league, and considered by some as the best WR coach around. Rice would not be taking notes so much as coaching alongside him.
Mike Ditka is a HOF'er and he started out as an assistant with the Cowboys under Tom Landry. Bryant Young started as a graduate assistant at ND, Henry Ellard & Ken Norton Jr both started by coaching at the HS level. Those are just a few examples. Every coach has to start somewhere and gain experience. So yes Jerry Rice would make an excellent addition if he was assistant WR's coach or something of the like.
Re: teaching our WR's how to catch, there is an old saying "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink". Digest that saying. Just because you think Sully is a poor coach doesn't make you right, and judging by the fact that every OC has kept him on staff, and considering Sing also kept him on staff after he took the HC'ing job has to tell you something, like maybe your assessment is dead wrong.
Jerry Rice is the GREATEST WR TO EVER PLAY THE GAME. To think that he doesn't already know everything he needs to about coaching is ridiculous. He played the position at the highest level for 20 years! What could Sullivan teach the GOAT that he doesn't already know?
Obviously, best case scenario would be for Jerry to come in and work alongside Sullivan for a year. But, if we had to fire Sullivan right now to get Jerry, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Coaching and playing are 2 different things. While Rice is armed with a great deal of knowledge, he still has things to learn as a coach and learning from one of the best coaches at that position could only help Rice become a better teacher to his students.
To think he already knows everything about coaching is actually ridiculous. What proof is there that supports this ? Great players don't necessarily equal great teachers.
Mike Singletary is a great example of the point I am trying to stress, before he started coaching he spent as much time with Bill Walsh as possible to pick his brain and learn as much as he could about what it takes to be a successful coach. He also sought out other coaches, executives and referees to learn from.
Another great example, Issac Bruce. He has established himself as one of the greatest WR's ever, yet after he came here, he spent time around Jerry Sullivan and was asking him questions, attempting to learn anything and everything that his coach could teach him.
Good players are constantly striving to get better and a good coach or teacher should be doing the same (again see Mike Singletary). Learning is a non stop process and there is still things Jerry Rice could still be taught.

Guys, we are talking about position coaching. He is the best receiver ever, and I have zero doubts about his ability to teach the position. A receiver coach teaches a player how to play the position better, nothing more.
