based on what?
Technically grades should simply be a reflection of the standings. In which case we should get a C.
I guess he wants to give it a B, maybe because of how well they hung in with Indy and MIN? Or because the team was more equipped to be a losing team. A handful of plays away from the playoffs. Ya da yada yada.
Whatever.

I think the grading system is based on expectations. The 49ers were expected to be on the cusp of making the playoffs, but not a serious contender for making the playoffs.
We made a good, decent push, but it wasn't a GREAT push. A C+ or B sounds about right, given that thought process.

I say C is more like where we stand, if we learn to close games and had more of an aggressive approach instead of only being aggresive in the 2nd half we might have won 2 or 3 games.

You must be an expert in the field of "grading football seasons".

Man, didn't you know he is the Nostrildomus of football, he has gone out on a limb and successfully predicted that our team would suck for the past 6-7 years, and guess what...he was right!
Amazing!

Well I just think people doing their own "grading" is egotistical. Thats what the games are for. Thats why they play them. The season results ARE the grades.
As for predictions, that is a different story.
Hey Memphis, I go out on limbs too. I also predicted the Bengals would go to the playoffs before pre-season. Of course I was laughed at.
I will go out on a limb with the Niners as soon as I see reason to.

Doesn't take much to please him, does it ?.......personally i expect a little more then that. Being the playoffs were what was expected I'd give it a D-.

We only beat one good team outisde of the division and it was the Jags who aren't that great. I like how we played the best teams hard but we still lost
8-8 = Average and Average = C

What he's saying is progress was made...and he's right. Our defense took another step toward dominance...and Alex did resurrect our passing attack. Plenty of work to be done, particularly on offense...but he's simply giving credit where it's due. Clayton's one of the few national writers I trust...he normally gets it right...and doesn't appear to be an East Coast homer like so many are.

The 49ers, and many of the niner fans, expected this team to make the playoffs. But a lot of people in sports media expected us to have another losing season. I think Clayton was one of the people who did not think the niners were going to be that great this year. So based on his expectations we over performed, showed development, and got a good grade.
I know a lot of fans really thought we were better than this, but most objective observes don't start raising expectations until you show them something. This season showed them a lot more than last season, I think.

dude we had a RB that went over 1100 yards with 13 TD's, and a TE that set the single season record for rec. TD for his position. our offense wasnt a D
and our special teams had an all-pro punter, an all-pro talent long snapper, a solid, reliable kicker, and only allowed 1 return TD all season i beleive.
KR/PR was the ONLY part of our ST that wasnt good. whats with this big false rumor that our ST sucked...
