This is an opportunity for a speedy RB...because we are also lacking any horizontal speed to the edge. Last year we had Rossum do an end around scoring easily with his speed. We need that RB/Punt Return combo.
It also surprised me that the '81 team had Bill Ring, Bill Davis at FB, Lenvil Elliot, Walt Easley, Ricky Patton, Don Woods, Paul Hofer, and Earl Cooper at RB/FB. That is 7 with a mid-season replacement for the injured Ricky Patton. We are seriously underpowered at RB with coffee, gore, and robinson and just a single FB. RB did 1/3 of all of the Kickoff returns for that team.

What really pissed me off about this whole punt return thing was...........
WE HAD SPURLOCK and NEVER USED HIM AT PUNT RETURNER.
Instead, the powers that be thought he could run the wildcat!?!? What the hell were the coaches thinking???

Me too! It seems like the 49ers are lucky if they can find someone to catch a punt, let alone get some yards returning it.

The answer could well be Marshawn Gilyard...he's a 4.45 WR who's also an outstanding KR. With him, we can fill two roles in one player. This guy's a real playmaker.

Crap I would welcome R.W. McQuarters back in a heartbeat if he would be open minded and field some Punts. He of the run up the back of his own blocker variety.

Battle proved he has no worth on the team next year. Was Brandon Jones hurt at the end of the year or is it likely he will be cut too??

I agree about battle. I've been a fan but he is a liability to this team currently. Brandon Jones needs to step up and play some wideout next season for what we are paying him. It's alot of dead money if we cut him.
