We are only above the Bills, the Raiders and the Browns. That is horrible. It doesnt matter how many turnovers we get per game, we wont be able to win any games against a decent defense if we do not improve. I am very skeptical about bringing Jimmy back. I am excited about the fact that we will finally have a continuation of our offense this offseason, but not happy that it has to be Jimmy Raye calling the plays again.
Oh ya, what do the Bills, the Raiders, and the Browns all have in common with the 49ers? Bad quarterback play. Its not a coincidence.

They also all have bad offensive lines and mediocre head coaches.

You're not telling the whole story here.
We're ranked 29th in one category only and that's total yards per game. We're ranked 19th in total points per game. We're ranked 15th in total passing TDs and 20th in rushing TDs. We're tied for 17th in pass plays of 20 or more yards, 19th in pass plays of 40+ yards, 19th overall in QB rating (this with two different QBs). We're ranked 8th overall in yards per carry, 9th overall in rushes of 20+ yards, and 3rd overall in rushes of 40+ yards.
Can our offense use some more help? Absolutely. Is it the 29th worst offense in the league? Not by a long shot.
Forgot to add that we also have a top ten red zone offense.

This was the worst part for me
"It should be noted that the 49ers entered Sunday's game against Detroit with the 27th-ranked offense. The Lions, meanwhile, ranked 32nd in defense. After the game, the 49ers' offensive ranking dropped two notches."

Wow, this 29th in the league stat in yards tells me that our defense is close to being very elite-in that we're able to "hang" with the Colts, Titans; come back to almost beating two good teams in the Packers, and Texans, in their own house might I add!!!
The miracle in Minn.; if our offense is so stagnant, which it was a lot of the year with both qbs, (3 and outs) then dang guys, this defense is one I watch out for next year. (Aubrayo is a huge part though.) Nothing to really look down on in my opinion. We're going to get a lot better from this offseason to the next

The "total offense" stat is pretty useless in my opinion. What's the point in having a wicked offense that piles up gaudy stats if your defense can't stop a pop warner team? We've seen plenty of teams like that miss the playoffs.
Along with what has been mentioned above, I think the Points For/Points Against stat is much more useful. While it can be corrupted by the odd blow out on either side of the ball, the PF/PA metric does more than simply describe whether you're moving the ball, it lets you know if you're moving the ball in a useful way.

I know right, last season the Broncos were 2nd in "total offense" yet only scored 2pts more per game then our lousy offense last season. There is some significance to the stat but its not as important as you would think

Do you really think that it's fair using all of these facts to destroy the OP's post....
Keep up the the good work.

You seriously think Alex Smith QB play has been bad? Sure it's not great but it is at least average and what I would consider above average placing it in context (oline, coming in middle of session, not playing because of injuries for two plus years, etc.)

10 out of the top 15 ranked offense are going to be in the playoffs. So YES we need to improve our overal offense production by about 100 yards a game. That means more 3rd down conversions, more total yards a game, less turnovers , which will turn into more chances for our offense to score.
A great offense will get you to the playoffs, and a great defense will keep you in the playoffs.
