As it appears we're steaming forward towards the next season with (gasp!) the entire coaching staff intact, one thing no one will be able to say is that the team is still coming together as a unit. It's a "win-now" league and if the coaching staff with the key players in their places cannot get over the hump, we'll know exactly what we have. If they show considerable progress after a full offseason together and continue to improve during 2010, then at least we'll know something positive is happening.
Thinking back to the Erickson and Nolan days, there just was so much ambiguity about gauging the progress of the team. Now, we get to compare apples to apples. Coach, OC, and QB are all going to be the same, there's nothing to hide behind for Alex, Sing, or Raye. It's all on them.

You do know we have Alex Smith who throws 3 INTs where only 1 of them is his fault, right?
Excuses will be plenty. We should get into the playoffs on consistency alone but don't expect too much out of the passing game.

Agree 100%. In 2010, no more excuses, especially for these 5:
1.) Coach Singletary
2.) Scot McCloughan
3.) Alex Smith
4.) Nate Clements
5.) Joe Staley (not convinced he's a real LT)
All of these guys need to step up big time and have a great 2010. If they do, we have a legit shot at winning our division. If they don't, we'll be watching the playoffs on tv again and these 5 f**kers need to to be replaced.

I guess I was thinking more "big picture" than that. But I can understand where you're coming from.
Should they beat the Rams next week and finish 8-8, I think we have to be thankful for that improvement. We can explain away a lot of the close loses, or "make excuses" as you say, but after these past 6 years I'm just happy the team could compete with virtually every opponent they faced this year.

This is a good point. I recall reading about the staff's inability to gameplan for opponents they aren't familiar with. That's kinda important. Not sure how they'll address that but I'm hopeful that the coaches' sophomore season together allows them to learn from their mistakes as Frosh.

First time I've heard some real Staley-hate on here. Interesting take.

Inability to win on the road is what's killing this team.

He didn't look good out there against Detroit.

Good post - totally agree. I think Staley would be an excellent LTackel and hopefully we can get a an excellent draft pick like Joe Thomas in the draft.
