There is no magic bullet that is going to fix this team by itself. Not a QB. Not a KR/PR. Not a RT, OG, playmaking FS, stud passrusher, or anything else. We can disagree on the order our needs should be addressed, but arguing any one of those things isn't a need in the first place simply ignores the reality of our situation.
We're an 8-8 team talentwise. Realistically, we need to upgrade several positions to be contenders. And we can't fight the draft and/or FA to do so. We can't afford to trade up for a QB, but we can't pass on a QB if one falls into our laps Crabtree style, either.
Alex has earned the right the come back as our uncontested starter, provided our roster remains unchanged at QB. But lets not pretend that makes him a great QB or even the clear longterm answer to our QB problems. He may develop into that guy, but he's isn't that guy right now.
Pretending all we need is a new QB makes about as much sense as pretending QB isn't a need in the first place. Both of those arguments are full of fail.
Thank you, you understand the big picture.
All I really have to add, is that I believe -- or know, rather -- that they're still trying to decipher if Alex can be the long term answer, and I don't think they've been able to do that with just 7 starts this year, nor will they be able to do that with a total of 9 starts this year..
Alex is going to have to really impress in his contract year -- and that's where they're giving him that opportunity to prove he is the long term answer. He may not be, but he's done enough to be given the opportunity. It's the most sensible thing to do at this point. If he can't... well, he walks and Nate takes over and we aren't sitting here waiting for several more years to find a QB.
I was ok with what you said until you made that last dumb statement. You have no idea what Nate can or can not do. In fact, he has shown more of an ability to perform than not. Yet you come to some dumb conclusion. And that old crap about him only performing against 3rd stringers ignores the fact that he was also playing with 3rd stringers without having first team reps. You appear more intelligent than that which is the reason why I highlight the stupidity of your unsupported conclusion. Real 49er fans are tired of these back handed insults from those of you who support Smith to the point where you make excuses for every thing he does not do.
You have a peculiar way of contradicting yourself. To being with, your response indicates that I was criticizing Nate Davis. Then, you call my speculative guess of Nate taking over a "dumb conclusion," yet.. you appear to be confident in Nate, citing support for his "ability to perform." Apparently you agree with my "dumb conclusion." So the response absolutely befuddles me...
I've speculated that Nate's potential is something the team has faith in, and as such, this is why they want to develop him. What is my support? My backing to my speculation that he would compete to be the starter if Alex leaves in the 2011 off-season is the fact that they have a plan set-up specifically to develop Nate. That quite clearly indicates or at least strongly implies he is the prospective insurance policy for Alex should Alex fail.
Again, the fact that fans here seem absolutely incapable of critical thinking is just appalling to me. This is not difficult stuff to understand.
Real 49er fans want this team to be successful as soon as possible. We're tired of being in rebuilding mode. Smart 49er fans can see and understand that a succession plan has been put into place, but some individuals are so blind that they don't even care. In utter ignorance, they seem to cry out with suggestions that would hurt this team's success both now and in the future.
This board never ceases to puzzle me. Even the most simple concepts are too difficult for some to comprehend. I applaud those that do.
