I am bummed also. I have been a fan for over 35 years, got to watch my favorite team under the leadership of the greatest owner ever in sports, Eddie DeBartolo become a perpetual Super Bowl contender for almost 20 years straight, and then turn to a mess that strives for mediocrity. At 48 I will not out live Jed York, and I fear in my lifetime I will never see my beloved 49ers hoist the prized Lombardi trophy ever again.

49yo here Bob, I hear you loud and clear. To see people so happy about this collection of mismatched parts compared to the finely tuned machine that was the 49ers is sad indeed. The only thing the two teams have in common is the logo on the helmet and nothing more.

You know I hate say "wait until next year," BUT there have been some POSITIVE developments this year that really stand out:
1. Alex Smith may have the potential to develop into a solid NFL QB.
2. V. Davis has turned into ass kicker T.E.
3. Gore has shown that what ever the formation he still can produce the big numbers.
4. Crabbs COULD really be special.
5. We will finally have the same OC two years in a row.
1. Brooks may be our pass rushing savior.
2. Franklin and McDonald are beasts.
3. Spencer is back and Brown looks good.
4. Smith is the best D.E. in the NFL.
We can certainly hang our hats on these guys!

I don't expect for us to win anything significant as long as Alex Smith is our starting quarterback.

I think McClaughan has fallen short in too many off-seasons. Four years now and we have the same weaknesses, (QB, O-line and pass rush). He's had some very questionable signings, (Jennings), trades, (D-Jax), and drafts, (Balmer). Not to mention how he mishandled the whole Crabtree debacle. Maybe he's an upgrade to Donahue but not by much. Every good pick he's made has been a no brainer or just dumb luck. Can’t wait to see what he gets with our two first rounders.

we are basically the same team as last year. It is what it is. Now, if things do not change after 2010 then i would be bummed.

LOL.
His good picks are "no brainers" and "dumb luck."
But his bad picks are his fault.

When you compare his drafting against realistic measurements, rather than just plucking a name from the air, actually he has done well. Factor in that Nolan couldn't develop players at all, and the drafting looks even better.
As for FA, there was no choice at the time of Jennings, and our need was great. Actually he was a pretty good player on the rare occasions he wasn't injured. Then there was Smith, Spikes, Clements.
Not saying he has done everything right. But he gets way too much criticism around here

Packers hired Dom Capers last offseason as their d coordinator.
