We talk about the 49ers lacking an identity on offense, but it appears to be coming clear in my view. Frank Gore has, but is not comfortable running effectively out of the shotgun. As much as it pains me to admit, Alex Smith cannot pass effectively, nor is he comfortable playing under center. Until the 49ers can find a happy medium between the two, they will struggle to be consistent. Furthermore, because of that the 49ers are telling the defense based on those formations whether the play is going to be a run or pass.
Going forward (and I think Alex Smith is the best option for 2010--but McCloughan should do his due diligence on Clausen/Bradford and he will) the 49ers need to tailor their offense around Smith, or a get a new QB. Alex Smith's flaws are that he plays slow which leads to inaccuracy. I don't think he's consistent enough to be better than what he is now.
What I'm saying is that the 49ers need to address the OL AND QB.
If this is perceived as another Smith thread, I apologize and merge accordingly.
