Buyer Beware: The Cardinals Game Was A Fluke

I would put put both the Atlanta and Cards games in the same catagory. We aren't as bad as we looked against the Falcons or as good as we looked last night. Until we win more than we lose for a couple of seasons we are still somewhere in the middle as our record indicates.

Geez MD . . . couldn't you have at least waited 24 hours to harsh our collective mellow? I was really hoping to bask in this light until kick-off in Philly.
Everyone should bask. It is good to bask. But, overreaction on the board is always the norm.
And you are the self appointed warden to police the board and it's overboard enthusiasm after a game that we have not seen the likes of for YEARS, less then 24 hours later?
Do you take pride in being the way you are? Do you enjoy crushing the enthusiasm and pride thats so often missing from this board? Did you REALLY think your dose of reality was necessary in light of of the over abundance of positive posts on this board?
Sometimes people overreact even though they know the truth of the matter, because just for a short time it feels good to bask and forget that ugly truth.
Go ahead tho MD. You keep on enlightening our pitiful, unintelligent, feeble minds incapable of knowing about the NFL and what a championship type team looks like.

I was a happy man last night. But the only thing that dissapointed me was Alex Smith didnot play consistent.
I am afraid of the Philadelphia game, usually the Eagles tend to blow us out.

Thanks! I guess I was too quick to defend Smith. There seems to be a lot of folks that don't want to give him credit for anything..........

It was not a fluke. We were built to beat the Cardinals.
If we played them 10 times, we would beat Arizona 8 times.
It doesn't mean we're a playoff team or that we're a great football team.
All it means is that we OWN Arizona.[/quote
This is true...

It was nice to go to bed late last night with a studly victory over a hated divisional rival, especially the Arizona Cardinals. The team played well, the coaching staff seemed prepared, and the fans were pumped.
Now, back to reality.
Niners' fans have to take this game for what it is: A fluke. The Cardinals are a better team than the Niners right now, but as we know, every game is a new game, and you can only take one game at a time. This was one game. A great game for the Niners, and a stinker for the Cards.
Any victory is sweet, but the reality is that the Cardinals had no business turning the ball over seven times. Our defense is simply not that good, and their offense is simply not that bad. I hope fans do not expect the defense to be a turnover-creating machine from every game on out. This was an exception.
The same goes for Frank Gore, who looked terrific. However, let's not kid ourselves. Gore is a middle of the road running back. He's going to have a few great games, some average games, and some poor games. This was one of those special nights where everything fell into place.
The offensive line opened up huge holes, and dominated the Cardinals DL throughout the game. However, this is not our normal OL. We have struggled all season, and I doubt this one game changes the reality that our line generally stinks.
And, I sincerely doubt that our team suddenly falls back into the "smashmouth" philosophy. Who would we be kidding? We are a passing team that works best when the field is spread out. It just so happened that for one week, we could line up in a regular offensive formation and run at will.
Our CB's contained Fitzgerald and Boldin to less than 70 yards receiving TOTAL, but let's be realistic. Our passing defense was amongst the worst in the NFL going into the game, and I sincerely doubt that we are going to play weekly at a high level. It was just a wierd, wierd game.
And, finally, for those who think the Niners' pass rush has been solved, this would be another mirage. No doubt that we should salute the excellent effort of Justin Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, and company. But once again, the offensive line performance this week by the Cardinals was a joke. If they played this poorly the week before, they would have surrendered 56 sacks to Jared Allen and the Vikings. They just stunk for a week, and we looked fresh.
So, while celebrating this victory, which was very sweet, the reality is that this game is indicative of the NFL. One week you can stink, and the next you can shine. The week before, the Cards whacked the Vikings and the Niners lose to the crappy Seahawks. This week, the Seahawks were crushed by the Texans 34-7, the Vikings destroyed the Bengals 30-10, and the Niners defeat a good Cardinals team.
So, I raise a toast to the David Baas', Dashon Goldson's, Ahmad Brooks', Dre Bly's, Adam Snyder's of the world this week, fully knowing that these players had terrific games. But, let's be realistic in our expectation of these guys down the road.
It is simply one week in the NFL. One wild and wacky week.
MadDog, you really have a "glass is half empty" tone here.
I normally agree with what you have to say, and I actually agree with a couple issues you bring up. But some of this is just flat wrong.
I'll start with your Frank Gore comments. "Middle of the road" isn't anywhere close to being Frank Gore. Are you aware that Frank has 10 TDs this season, with over 1000 total yds on the season? He is only 165 yds away from another 1000 yd rushing season and is averaging over 5 yds a carry! How is that "middle of the road"?? Keep in mind, this is with 3 games yet to play AND he missed 2 full games and almost all of a 3rd game. I won't even mention that Raye abandoned Gore in 2 other games. Gore is an elite back in this league. Not his fault if Raye decides to pass 50 times a game.
And the remark about holding Fitz and Quan to less the 70 yds. That was NOT a fluke my friend. The Niners DBs have been known to play these guys tough, nothing "weird" about that. Fitz and Quan have had several below avg games against us, that seems to be the "norm" against us.
I'm not ready to crown this team yet. But they're getting better, that much is obvious. Instead of a fluke, I like to think of it as a glimpse of what this team is capable of.

MD,
I absolutely respect your opinions about drafting, and I don't dance around when you invariably miss one.
That said, this is a silly post. The big problem is the straw man argument you've constructed for many of these "edgy" thoughts. Who are the people who are predicting we'll be getting 7 turnovers a week? Whose eye are you sticking your finger in? You present this as if you're being contrary to a belief that's actually held by anyone here.
The trite truism that teams have good weeks and bad weeks is a closing point. Really?
There are people here operating under the assumption that Brooks will average three sacks a game and destroy the record books from this day forward?
I think the main problem is that you're offering conjecture instead of any analysis. The Cards responded to our "big" spread by going to nickel and putting 8 (sometimes 9) in the box when Smith went under center. It was a pretty smart strategy actually, but just didn't work. Alex was certainly off last night and Chilo and Baas looked much better pulling than they have so far this season, but overall, compared to our awful offense in the first half of the year, the "big" spread is working (at the very least working better). Give the way the Cards played it, it's not entirely surprising that Gore had a bigger game than Smith as opposed to vice-versa for the last three weeks. I think it's misinformed (and primarily a function of hubris on your part, I hate to say) to predictively declare what will happen in the next three weeks. It's largely a function of what Philly, STL, and DET do on defense. Merely declaring that Gore is mediocre is a waste of everyone's time, particularly after he had a good game.
