I think that Alex's accuracy was affected by the fact that they didn't run passes exclusively out of the shotgun. So he had to take a lot of drops, and he looked a little bit rusty whilst taking his steps back. But what this did was give the Niners a chance to pound the rock without giving away every run play when Alex was taking snaps under center.
If he gets a whole off-season to practice non-shotgun formations, I think Mike Johnson will continue to do a good job on his footwork. Martz seemed to have a lot of good fundamentals to teach, but he seemed more focused on JTO so Alex didn't learn much from him.

Smith was off because of the Cardinals pass rush, I think for the first time for smith(inside the spread/ray gun/ ) offense, Smith is being bombarded with blitzes. However when he connected with crabtree for that touchdown, there was a 3-4 man rush with no obvious pressure, smith hit crabtree right on the target. I think the key to smith's success is giving him time and protection make him feel comfortable not rushed, then he will be at his maximum level in terms of game play and accuracy.
That's why we desperately need consistent excellency in the offensive line.

he was off on a bunch of passes... Arizona should thank him, because if he played on target like he had the past few weeks, it would have been a total blowout.....

Smith was off last night, but prior to this he has been pretty accurate. Hopefully the next 3 games he gives the performance of his short carear and we end with a winning record.

Smith does well against pressure actually:
Against blitzing defenses:
60% completion
4 TDS
1 INT
97 rating
Against 5 man fronts:
50% completion
2 TDs
0 INT
129.2 rating

Personally, I think Smith gets a little reckless @ times. He's trying to force the ball in REALLY tight windows. He's succeeded more often than not which is awesome...but as we saw last night (and the TEN game) it can backfire and result in INTS or stalled drives.
Kinda crazy that "Smith" and "reckless" are used in the same sentence though. The confidence is definitely there. The fine tuning is not though. That can be fixed though so I'm not worried. I'll take 15 TDs and 9 INTs from a QB any day after 8 games. Garcia was the last QB that put up those kind of numbers for us.
Nice post, you are really on point with what you're saying.

Smith was definitely off last night but what impressed me the most is he was able to convert some key 3rd and longs in the 4th qtr.
With Smith starting from day 1 in tc with VD,Crabs, etc and a upgraded OL the chemistry should be much better for this offense next year.

Maybe we have to come to grips with the fact that he isn't and never will be an accurate between the numbers type of QB. Not every QB is Drew or Peyton.
If that's the case then we need to dump his ass.
Or run an offense that doesn't have the QB making difficult throws, something like the old WCO. Garcia was pretty good in it and made the pro bowl.
There's no such thing as an offense without difficult throws. Not in the NFL. And especially not the West Coast Offense.

The first two drives Smith was wildly inaccurate. I was pretty sure it had to do with him being pumped up for MNF in a big game. I was expecting it and waiting for him to settle down. He made much better throws later in the game but I don't think it ever went away for him last night. Up to the point of his last INT, he was very iffy on his throws. As opposed to other games I've seen from him, every time he goes back to pass I would wonder what we were going to get. Raye going back to Gore after the last INT really helped Smith.
He did just enough for us to win, but not one of his better game.
If I can remember right Steve Young had some wild inaccurate passes early in big games too, especially against the Saints' defense and Dallas He settled down quickly though. I hope Smith can learn to do the same.

Fact is he has been accurate, so accurate in fact he is hitting guys in the face mask! Let's stop over analyzing. He is doing well, still has things to improve on we all know. Let's give him credit and understand he did come into this thing almost halfway through with a rookie receiver, who hadn't taken a snap or practiced at all, a damaged o line and oh by the way a change in offensive philosophy!
58.7 QB rating; how is that, "fact is he was accurate"???
I agree with Suswell.. after he gets all the reps and another year of consistency with Raye and he hasn't settled down, look for another.. He has to start hitting guys in the numbers, tons of hig and behind and over passes last night. A win, is a win though...
As a matter of fact I don't see anything wrong with getting another QB this draft, and lose Hill and go young..

Many of Smith's "off" throws seemed to be poor communication with WRs. That will be eliminated with time. What I really like about Smith this year are his interviews and demeanor on and off the field. He seems relaxed and under control. He uses humor and intelligence in his interviews that is very welcome when compared with other QBs in the league.
