I am still furious that we let Rossum go. How can we not discuss this? This was a HUGE mistake that has really impacted our season.

We release him, Battle fumbles a ball against the Texans because he tries to catch it even though he cant see it because the sun is in his eyes. The Texans score a touchdown a couple plays later. Final score: 24-21. Rossum is a veteran and would have not made that mistake.

Colts game: We have our really expensive cornerback returning punts and he breaks his shoulder. He is going to miss his 6th straight game as a result.

Seahawks game: We have Arnaz Battle try and hand the ball to Brandon Jones (A guy who has no business returning punts) and they fumble. That situation would have never came up if we did not release Rossum. Seattle scores a touchdown a couple plays later. We lost 20-17.

P.S. Why the negative post? Well there wouldnt be much to talk about on this board if everything was going well with our team. And I'm frustrated that our season is going to end the same way it has for the past 2 years: Win a couple games in the beginning, have a big losing streak in the middle, and just when the playoffs are out of reach, we start winning games.
Yeah I know. I've been saying it for weeks. Even if we had ZERO return yards and a guy who could just catch the damn ball and secure it. That would be better than what we have now.

I dunno where you've been, but it seems to me this is discussed quite often, in every thread about: problems the niners have, b jones, and returning duties. Just sayin
I know this sounds crazy, but you have to do crazy things sometimes....

I did not like Rossum back there...if bobbled a couple of returns and was not getting as much yardage like he used to....and was basically taking up a roster spot...

but I feel the team should have either deactivated Battle for a couple of games or just released him, I don't know why he is still on the team.. I don't hate the guy, but its time to move on.... if I knew the idiot coaching staff would have Battle keep returning punts or that Brandon Jones didn't know that he could fair catch then yeah we should have kept Rossum....

this is the "crazy" part....ok, I don't know...buuuuuut maybe we should have tried Spurlock back there before releasing the guy....hell even kick returns...that his specialty.....

I would have rather had Crabs, Hill, Morgan, Jones, Spurlock, Bruce as our WRs...and let go of Battle...

I'm pretty sure Spurlock is a better WR than Rossum is at CB... also Spurlock has the ONLY TD Kick return in Buccaneers history...... I can't believe we didn't give him a chance in the regular season....

the coaching staffs are idiots, I swear....its like there is a KR depth chart based on seniority being with the team.... WE HAVE F'N MICHEAL ROBINSON (he is rated 78 speed on Madden for a reason) as our F'n KR...the guy that runs straight, ALL the time.....and now they want to have our starting WR back there as well, WTF???

if the coaching staff would have had common sense, maybe Clements would still be playing right now helping our secondary, and maybe our season would be different.....without the injury and key turnovers that have happened.

Our last loss is on VD for dropping the winner in the endzone.

The YORKS have excellent value though at the HC position. They don't have to pay $6 Million a year to Shannahan.

"Some of you, (RedNGold) have been after me about finding out why returner Allen Rossum was released. Three reasons: He couldn't stay healthy, he couldn't catch the ball and he was shying away from contact. If you go back to his last game, he dropped two or three kickoffs and punts. Secondly, he was constantly looking to scoot out of bounds. Lastly, he was waylaid by leg strains and pulls.

When Dallas picked up, he immediately pulled his hamstring and once he recovered, the Cowboys cut him. He's out there but the 49ers nor any of the other 31 teams seem interested in a 34-year-old returner who should now look into insurance sales. Where the 49ers erred was pulling initial replacement Arnaz Battle off the job so quickly after he lost a punt in the sun against the Texans. Battle is the team's best punt returner and he just needed a few punts to get acclimated because he hadn't done it in five years."

I love Vernon, and I am a massive fan. The guy has come miles, and is really gracious to fans (I met him at Hooters in Campbell, and the guy was actually happy to shake hands with a fan...pretty cool)), but he had the winner in his mitts, and dropped it.

He'll get better, as will Alex, Frank (contrary to popular opinion, I feel that he has a very bright future int eh current 49er offense) and Michael.

Vernon is on his way...but he did drop the game winner. That just is what it is.
Rossum isn't the answer. He's been cut TWICE this year by TWO different teams. That should tell all of us something... He's not the same guy in years past...

Weather its Rossum or not, the decision by Scotty not to value how important it is to have a good return specialist, and a couple others guys that can do it if needed. pisses me off

Did they think Spurlock could do it? I thought so, considering he was cut after Rossum
and was one of the only guys with upside potential and experiance at it, Battle should have been a 3rd or 4th choice in an emergency, and Jones looks horrible at it

Not a good idea to do it with you starting LCB ,that may have cost us a win or two also

Candlestick is a tough place to field punts, we need a top tier PR back there ,
The Niners must fix this in the offseason, with a free agent (Sproles would be sweet and a perfect 3rd down shotgun RB) but that may be dreaming a bit, but looking at other potential free agents, it looks real thin out there

Sproles is right up there with Mankins and McNiell at the top of my FA wish list,
and once we get to the draft make sure that 5th rnd WR/RB/CB has some potential to also be a return specialist
If we cant get Sproles, Spiller sure does look good

Rossum is not even playing in the NFL. There isn't one team that wants him. Lock thread.

Yes the oft injured, step out of bounds way to freaking often Rossum is available. he was cut by Dallas for the same reasons we cut him!

Let Battle return every thing until he gets better at it he as shown some ability despite a some mistakes, what ever we do who ever we choose, we need to give them time to learn, we need to stop the "Kick return Carousel"

A different return man every game is killing us!
