WOW. I can't believe some of the comments here.
Balmer has been playing very well in the past six games or so. He hasn't been getting a LOT of playing time because the starting three have played so very well but losing him out of the rotation is NOT a good thing.
Really? I haven't even noticed him when I rewatch the games. I'd rather cut him and draft someone else. Guy has done absolutely nothing to impress me. He produces like a 6th round pic
I have seen him, even with the little time he had gotten to play and without having to re-watch games. I have seen him get pressure on the QB a few times and make some stops. Even in MM's breakdowns of games, he has stated that Balmer is doing a good job with the little opportunity he gets.
Fans can be so fickle. The same people who are so quick to dump a guy are the same people who wanted to cut Smith in the off-season. Balmer may pay-off down the road, especially if the Niners don't want to pay Franklin the kind of money he will most likely demand.
Yeah, Balmer is solid with a lot of upside. What is everyone talking about? I always feel like I'm watching a different team than most other bloggers are.

This guy is a scrub with little to no upside. He is invisible on the football field even when he does play. A complete waste of a draft pick.

It is never a good thing when you are somewhat educated about College prospects and you have to ask "WHO?" after your teams 1st round selection.
Seriously, this is a huge strike on scotty. I mean at least know where you can get guys, cuz balmer most likely would have been around on the next pick

he will be the savior of our pass rushing woes. Because, you know, thats what 3-4 linemen do, get sacks.

Unlike that stud #3 overall pick, Tyson Jackson, with his 17 tackles and no sacks. It takes DL time to improve. And 3-4 DEs rarely stand out anyway.

Yeah, cut him. Good call. Because no NFL team needs depth. And because D-Line is super easy to play at a high level as a young player. He's developing nicely at a position that is very difficult to learn proper technique. At worst he provides nice depth to our D-Line rotation.
Just curious, which 3-4 defensive ends around the league have done a lot to impress you?
what a smart aleck lol f**ker , obviously I don't mean cut him right now. I mean he could and very well should be cut in the not to distant future b/c he isn't showing the upside you guys are seeing to me. TO ME, which is my opinion. He isn't doing anything special. It's not that difficult of a position and its not rocket science: You be where you are suppose to be and you make plays. He is slow, doesn't ever get low enough, and doesn't make plays. I watch the niner games over and over and this guy doesn't show much development to me. I think we would have just as much upside and contribution from a later round rookie next yr. Not to mention the fact that we are over paying him to ride the bench and do nothing except give good players a breather.

I'd heard of him, and I didn't see a prognosticator having him lower than the first round with a few as early as the low teens. Almost all reports said he had physical talent, but he probably could have used another year of school.
For two years people said "wait 'il Sopoaga sees the field", then when he did they started saying "bust!" When we signed Franklin, people said "who?" and hen all through the first and second year they were saying "waste of money", and then his year, suddenly he's a possible franchise player!
Linemen don't get a lot of attention. People like Justin Smith are freakishly talented exceptions. Balmer was called "raw" when he came in. Give him time. As he masters the techniques of the position, we may yet see his talent emerge!
They say only 60% of first rounders pan out. Scotty hit on Patrick willis. He hit on Vernon Davis. He hit on Joe Staley. That's 50% of his 6 first round picks. What about Manny Lawson? Maybe not the pass rusher they hoped for, but he's a productive starter. Frankly, that would have to count as a hit. Alex Smih looked bad for quite a while, but these last few weeks, he too is starting to look like a hit. That means that if Balmer DOES flop, Scotty's hit on 5 out of 6 picks. But I suspect you'll see Balmer will end up being a pretty decent player too.
Does anyone remember us giving up on first round flop Ted Washington about a gazilion years ago? He went on to be a star elsewhere for about a decade and a half!

Balmer has not been able to crack the starting lineup ahead of Justin Smith, Aubrayo Franklin or Isaac Sopoga, but he gets action at left defensive end and some at nose tackle in the defensive-line rotation in base situations.
When he has gotten on the field, Balmer has done a pretty good job. Like most defensive linemen in this scheme, he is never going to put up huge statistics. But the team has been pleased that the level of play does not noticeably drop off when he gets on the field. And, from what I've seen, his commitment and hustle has never been an issue.

Balmer isn't a flop or a bust . . . he's just not DeSean Jackson.

Scotty blew it. We should have taken someone else. These are the notable people we passed on:
Kenny Phillips S
Philip Merling DE
Brandon Flowers CB
Curtis Lofton ILB
AND THEN we pick Chilo Rachel over a bunch of other guys i'm too embarrassed to mention.
You people who make the argument for this pick are wrong. We missed on these FOUR guys????? And we have what? A bench warmer Balmer.

This Atkins guy isn't even the size to play for 3-4 DE. He's more like 3-4 OLB size, most 3-4 DEs are usually above 280. I wonder if he can play some OLB for us? Maybe we can develop him?
