I agree. I would also like to see him get us a win. Instead of throws and plays like he did against the texans and the seahawks at the end. I would like to see him make those plays to keep the game alive and put us in the endzone for the win. He has had a few chances and hasn't gotten that yet. But he is looking great in comparison to his past and I have hope he can do it.
I disagree. That's in the past, water under the bridge. We can't get any of that money back, so what happened 2, 3, 4 years ago is just that. Let it go. He's taken a paycut(deservedly so), and he's acknowledged that he didn't live up to the initial contract. That being said, I would not extend him until near the end of next year. I think he'll finish this year strong and with a full camp next year and hopefully he'll get a full year to prove he's the guy or not.

A: Top 5 QB
B: Top 10 QB
C: Top 15 QB
D: Less than average QB, but hope that they may improve (rookies will generally be here)
F: Team needs a new QB
New England - A
Miami Dolphins - D
NY Jets - D
Buffalo Bills - F
Cincinnati Bengals - B
Baltimore Ravens - C
Pittsburgh Steelers - B
Cleveland Browns - F
Indianapolis - A
Jacksonville - C
Tennesee Titans - C
Houstan Texans - C
San Diego - B
Denver Broncos - D
Oakland - F
KC - C
Dallas - C
Philadelphia - B
NY Giants - B
Redskins - D
Vikings - A
Packers - B
Bears - D
Lions - D
Saints - A
Falcons - C
Panthers - F
Buccaneers - D
Cardinals - A
49ers - C
Seahawks - B
Rams - F
I wasn't able to hold to the rankings above, as B ended up being top 12, and C ended up being top 20. What this tells me is that 20 teams in the NFL have a QB that can win them games, and the bottom 12 need improvement in their QB position to be competitive. So right now, the 49ers are middle of the pack when it comes to their QB play. I can definitely see Smith getting a B rating next year...
A: 5
B: 7
C: 8
D: 7
F: 5
alex and garrard are D's as of now. haven't shown enough

They're rated on how they're playing right now, not how they could play.

I am excited to see him go into the offseason as the starter with the same coordinator. I think if he starts next season with 3 games like he is finishing this season you will see new contract talks begin

GRANTED....provided the recipient of the pass actually CATCHES the ball. But lets wait till the end of the season before any talk of a contract.

Alex Smith = No contract extension
It's too early. A few games don't make or break a player.
Also, I wish we take some of Brandon Jones's gauranteed money and hand it over to Willis. It's a real shame that joker Jones got a 5 yr deal.

I don't care if he costs us more money, if he puts up 4k yards and 30TD's I have no problem paying him.
.
If he lights it up for the rest of year then work to extend his contract in the off season for maybe 2 years past the 1 year we already have him for.
yea i would add on a year or two i'm sure it would give him a boost in confidence and maybe he can start speaking out and telling people what he wants and needs to succeed, i think he is still walking on egg shells around here

For those of you that want Alex Smith to play out his current contract, what is your plan if he plays very well in 2010 and then demands top QB money? If the 49ers don't give it to him, another team will, as finding a top-10 QB on the market never happens.
I understand the concern about giving Alex Smith a long-term deal right now, though - he hasn't proven that he deserves it yet, and if he does regress, then the 49ers spent a lot of money for a QB that shouldn't be starting.
For that reason, I think extending his contract an additional year (and overpaying him for that 2 year period) is probably the safest for both sides. It allows the 49ers to avoid the scenario where they overpay a player for a long-term contract, but they also avoid the situation where their starting QB hits the open market.

More than ever the idea of credit needs to be understood here. Alex owes the Niners a little more loyalty....due to the HUGE discconnect between Pay vs. production 2005-2007

yeah but what if he plays lights out next year and takes us to the playoffs, there will be many teams trying to get him and drive up the price to insane standards.
