Why does it seem like at least one of our o-linemen either gets over powered or misses/forgets thier assignment on every single play?
So, is it our scheme/coaching or is it our players?
Your thoughts?

Some of the guys are young and will probably get better as they learn to play, unfortunately we have some that are just not as strong as who they are lining up against. I think we might need a new strength coach and definitely should look to upgrade the o line coach if we can.

The main problem with this o line is the inability to block the A gaps. The A gap between the center and guards is constantly getting abused. Bass and Chilo aren't holding up at the point of attack at all. Looks like a comobo of just bad play and porr technique. Thus why when teams blitx they blitx right up that gap. Heitmann and both the guards need more cohesiveness somehow. But Bass and chilo both need to be upgraded. Across the board they pretty much all stink when it comes to run blocking. Like Memphis said coaching changes are in need on the o line coaching staff.

Our Oline has been weak for the last few years. We need a new Oline coach, a ORT and a quality LOG to develop soon. Scot say he can get quality guards late in the draft - then why hasn't he done so?

The Offensive line is very young and inexperienced. Heitman is the only intended started on the line that was in the NFL before 2005. The injuries on the line has caused them to lose a lot of playing time together and a lot of depth. There's going to be some highs and lows with this part of the personnel

I wouldn't really call our OL young and inexperienced. There are many teams who have OL in the league for 3 years who are performing at a high level let alone adequate level.
There's something wrong with our coaching: you just don't miss on that many players.

I agree with you that OL as individuals succeed early in there career but young offensive lines as a group usually struggle in some phases of the game. Offensive line more than any other position is about knowing the tendencies of the player next to you and being able to rely on them. 4 players on the line growing and changing, there's going to be some problems.

This is spot on. Our best success run blocking comes on plays where the entire line shifts players down and then we have a guard pull. This takes care of the interior defense and allows for an extra blocker for Gore.
This is one reason why I'd like for us to try a few runs to the outside. Pull a guard, shift everyone's blocks down, and then leave the lineman to pick up whoever's out there.

I don't know if it's just a lost assignment or what.
On a running play, when the QB determines the "Mike" then the Oline then should know who their blocking assignment is (for example: center takes the Mike, LG takes the DT to the left of the Mike, RG takes the DT to the right of the Mike, and so on).
If they are aware of their assignments, then it falls on their success/failure in keeping their man occupied and engaged long enough for the backs to break through the line of scrimmage. It seems that this is the case for the failure of many of our running plays this year.

If you remember the line with Hosteler as OC...we found out after the season that Hosteler changed the OL blocking scheme and assignments. The line never got it and struggled all season. As soon as Martz came in it stablized. (nevermind the sacks associated with 7 step drops...the line did do better). Now with Raye..the scheme and assignement have changed again. The line simply hasn't had any consistency to have time to get it. Remember when Norv Turner went to San Diego. He changed their OL scheme and they struggled for halve a season.
We lost Baas for some games, Chilo got benched, Pashos got hurt replacing Snyder who wasn't doing well. Marvel retired in camp. Staley got hurt. Sims came in off the bench as did Wragge at times. So zip consistency. Their poor play as a result is no surprise.
We do need upgrades. That includes Heitman While Heitman can pass protect he gets absolute zero push on runniing plays and gets stuffed on short yardage. Along with 2 guards and an OT we need a new center that can do it all to anchor this line
