Psychologically Alex may still believe he is in a backup role. Singletary or someone has to anoint him and say from here on out "This is your team - you are our QB." It's kind of difficult for Alex to shrug off, when Shaun Hill beat him in training camp. He has this cloud over his head that keeps saying "Yo Alex, the only reason why you are starting is because they benched Shaun Hill for being ineffective. Do they really have any faith in you..???"

Look, I watched Montana during his entire career. He was not a firey, vocal, rah-rah type guy. The extent of his emotion was when he thrust his arms skyward when he threw a TD. The team believed in him and respected him.

Alex has been questioned about his own personality, and that he felt the team would respect him if he played well.

As for Alex's toughness, both physical and mental, I think he has proven himself. Playing with a screwed up shoulder was tough - it may have been stupid - but you can never say that he wasn't tough. I think Sunday's game revealed another type of toughness. Say what you will, but when you suffer as dismal and humiliating a 1st half as he did, then come out and play like he did in the second half, it tells me that he is not a quitter and doesn't give up.

We have a winner in him. But our GM and coaches need to surround him with the tools to take maximum advantage of his skills.
