smith played well when given time. There was a misq on the int. Curious to hear if it was him or the receiver.

Alex Smith threw 7 passes. He was sacked on 3 of 10 dropbacks. Smith wasn't atrocious, our line was. A QB cannot function if he's getting sacked 30 percent of the time. It's that simple. You can try to blameshift all you want, but I don't care who it is, we cannot have a successful QB with line play like that.
also, I believe 1 or 2 of those sacks were coverhae sacks. that gb secondary is GOOD!
and to just reiterate what I wrote (and many others did too) in the game day thread: the second half was not a soft GB defense. the GB defensive play calling was not soft, but adjusted for our spread offense. they still blitzed and they still brought (and got) pressure. why did the second half look so good? BECAUSE SMITH KNOWS HOW TO RUN THE SPREAD OFFENSE!
I know we are some of the most knowledgable fans out there, but sometimes I think we let our biases get th best of us. those td passes smith threw were not cake throws. even billick complimented smith on his PERFECT throws (not so much the one to gore).

For all of you rushing to defend Smith, and blame the line. You correctly point out that he was sacked and harassed in the first half.
In the second half he looked pretty good, why is that?
Could it be that green bay blitzed and stunted less? No Dom Capers has no mercy!
Why Alex is a mediocre NFL QB is simple, he has bad foot work in his drop back.
Alex looked better dropping back today than he has ever before, generally Alex nearly trips over his feet 2-3 times a game simply pulling out from under center, just watch the film you will see it.
Today no one single stumble. bravo Alex!
Alex looks down at his feet just for a second as he drops back, taking his eyes of the field.
When Alex looks down he loses sight of two things, his receivers and more importantly were the pressure is coming from.
A good QB makes the defense pay for blitzing, nobody Blitzes Farve or Payton with out getting beat by the hot read often enough to slow them down.
Alex is better at picking up the blitz and getting the ball out from the shotgun than he dropping back.
Here is the part were I explain why this is BAD for the Niners.
Gore is an I-formation north south back, he can be good out of the gun, but he is great out of the I.
Our O-line is to big and slow to block laterally and our guards are too slow to pull.
The problem is our curtains don't mack our carpet!
I like Alex out of the gun if we are going to keep him we need to make changes at O-line and running back.
I think our tackles are fine, we need to come up with some smaller fast guards to pull and zone laterally, and we need to add a shifty speed back (Kory Sheets?)
We have the wide outs for a lot of spread, we have the QB, we need to make some changes.
I would of course keep Gore, but he would have to have a smaller role in the offense, I would like to see how well Coffee runs the sweep. (Fly, Jet or Toss)
Here while I am at it are my list of players to cut in the offseason, in no order:
Offense
S Hill
M Robinson
M Noris
C Rachel
D Bass
D Walker
D Zeigler
Defense
Balmer
Roman
Bly
Haralson
I would look to trade any of these guys but I feel we can do better by raiding every practice squad in the league.
I would cut Bly monday as an example to light a fire under the rest of the team, Ziegler too.
I would Fire Forester Monday as well to let the coaching staff know that this kind of play.
Back in the day a Bill Walsh would cut somebody just get the teams attention, no school like the old school I say

You need two top tier tackles to run the spread. Say what you want about the sacks. THEY CLEARLY let up on this offense the 2nd half.

Sure the Offense sucked in the first half, but the defense gave up 23 points and could not stop the packers offense. We were out coached in the first half.
Alex Smith needs a better offensive coaching staff, designing game plans for him. Sure he doesnot have a winning record, but if the Defense plays that poorly then how can anybody win.
Brady, Manning have been with the same recievers or coaching staff for years. We need continuity going into next year. As much as I donot like Raye, we may have to have him again next year

I agree with most of your post, but what hell are you talking about in regards to Gore? Blind speculation gets you absolutely nowhere. Gore has been so much better out of the shotgun it's unbelievable. Don't make s**t up and assume if you want to be credible. You don't deserve my time in proving you wrong since you can't prove you're right, because you aren't. Gore an I Form back lol... when has that worked this season? Stats my friend do some research.

My god, Smith IS NOT GOOD. Stop making excuses for him. If he was a good QB you shouldn't have to mold every part of an offense around him. He has had enough OCs to maybe know more than the College spread.
Stop trying to justify a #1 pick. He sucks, therefor we suck. Defend him and be just as worthless to this franchise as him.
Not true. He's great in the Spread or West Coast Offense, but we run neither. He isn't a drop back QB. Sad thing is as a coach to mold to your players strenghts not try to fit square pegs in to round holes.
"Great", at any time, I think not.
He is entertaining at those times in the spread, ok.
Still, look at what he did in the spread, the same as he always does does 89% of the time; Throw an INT at THE worst possible time, THE worst. The terrible thing about it too, I was sitting in front of my monitor waiting for him to do it, I knew, I felt, he would. And he did.
Nothing is going to change, it's what he is, nothing more, nothing less.
The rest of this lost season is to see if the coaching staff can and will adapt to wht the team can do best and to see if they can get the D to play good; WHEN THEY HAVE TO. Not just on average when the game starts.
That running back GB has, is way good though, he looked like the guy we couldn't stop, was it the Texans? Super fast to the outside. Our D can't handle fast outside runners, kind of like the runner our coaching staff threw away, Kory Sheets. Idiots...

This is exactly what I was afraid of. We got our asses handed to us in the first half. That was the "real" 49ers squad. Inept on the offensive front with a defense trying its best to hang in the game. Alex Smith played atrocious. It was a tell tale of how this season has gone for us, and in the case of Alex Smith.......confirmed our suspicions that he's the same ole bust that he's always been.
But then GB got soft. They let off the aggression. The Niners became desperate (as we do in games where we're blown out by halftime) and started airing it out. All of a sudden, Alex looks like a hero. Attention is diverted away to OFF-FIELD issues (eg playcalling, coaching) instead of the garbage that is being displayed on the field.
Now..............even though we lost this game in the first half.........everyone is touting a MORAL VICTORY. No longer is Alex the bust that he's been since he became starter this season, but rather the unsung hero who brought his team back from extinction. Yeah, Ive seen this movie before.......try San Diego and Philadelphia 2006........where we were blown out by halftime + a piss poor performance by Smith, only to have him pad his stats against loose defenses in the 2nd half. End result = blind supporters flashing the "I love Alex Smith" badge and asking for his jersey to be retired next to Montana's.
And now we come full circle. Again, Alex comes up short in the first half. Niners get put out of the game. GB backs off in the 2nd....Alex gets a chance to open it up a bit (we'll forget the INT that led to GB's TD of course), and now we're shouting for a contract extension. Go Alex ! We know you're capable of "almost" winning it, and we'll ignore that you're one of the main reasons behind the loss to begin with.
Im sick of this s**t. There is no such thing as "moral" victories when you've been rebuilding for 7 years. There's no such thing as "moral" victories when your 1st round daft pick QB gets outshined by one who has a worse oline and supporting cast. And there's no "moral" victory with fans that find every damn excuse in the book to forgive their lame QB, who is ridiculed (watch highlights on NFL Network) by every major media outlet, but think they have a diamond in the rough that needs only a probowl RB, 2 probowl WRs, and 3/5 probowl OLinemen to showcase his REAL skills.
I really do wish that we would have lost, so we could finally start accepting the truth, instead of pretending that Alex will be a star if we use the spread offense. Yeah, like teams wont prepare for that. And then what, when we cant even get a completion with the spread ? Are we finally going to accept Alex as the bust that he is ? Oh no. We'll probably blame Raye or the oline as we always do.
PS - That INT wasnt Alex's fault. It was tipped by the leaf that was blowing in the wind.
Alex throws seven passes in the first half and that makes him a bust!? I guess Gore could be declining bescause he only had five carries also, huh!? Im not defending Alex here at all but by the end I probably will. How about assignong the blame to our defense and get off of his back. We all know they cannot get off the field.
He's played one full season since arriving here. Plus we all know the rest of the story. You have a first year HC and everyone wants to win a SB. This team is far from that. The playoffs are a question marked but not out of reach.
We've payed him so much money there is no reason not to see what he can do for the reast of this year and all of next year. Is Raye truly a great OC? No, just a MS puppet. They need someone to step in like the Titans did and say let the kid do what he does best and run with that. No one is truly sure if he is a bust or a starter that has had some bad breaks. We should want to find out though and then complain when he isn't here anymore, if that happens.
I know lets throw Nate Davis in with no O-Line and a limited playbook and see what happens! Or draft a QB and throw him in next year and see if he'll save the franchise! Does that sound familiar?
If Smith doesn't improve and show he is the starter for the next few years then draft a QB in April. Davis hasn't looked bad though so why not groom him for a few years. Or if you do draft a QB let him sit a year and make Alex earn his money that he has been paid?
My point is this teams woes cannot be blamed on a single person. There is far more problems then him. No QB could survive on this team!
Wow. Nice post.
Thank you!!!!!!
