Singletary let him loose that's why. Smith has been playing with one arm tied behind his back ever since.

How will we know if he can be a franchise quarterback if the coaching staff doesn't let him hang it all out? Their playing him way to careful.

well I could say the same thing about Rashaun Woods. How do 49er fans KNOW he sucked. We never saw him play?

You have to assume that so many coaches who use Alex Smith in the same way all recognized the same limitations that he has? Without that assumption we can not have a sane debate; because again...I can just bring up Woods and hundreds like him all day

Smith is f**ken garbage...plain and simple.

This.

Forget 300 yards. Smith rarely throws for over 200 yards!

Let's look at his starts so far this season. I exclude the 2nd half of the Texans game becuase the Texans were clearly not as aggressive on defense in the 2nd half with that huge lead and had not game planned for Smith. For that reason I'm looking only at the games Smith started.

Colts game: 198 yards passing

Titans game: 286 yards passing. That includes an 80 yard garbage time drive that happened in the final 3 minutes of the 4th qtr AFTER the Titans had put the game away by taking a two td lead.

Bears game: 118 yards passing

Summary: Smith sucks.

Let's look at Hill:

Arizona game: 209

Seattle game: 144

Minnesota game: 195

St Luis: 152

Atlanta: 198

Houston: 45, against a more aggressive defense, as you say.

Summary: Hill sucks

Could it possibly be, that it is the system rather than the quarterback? Could that even be contemplated?????

Agree with some here. Yards don't really mean squat, I am more concerned with completion %, rating, and 3rd down completion %... QB's always get over 300 yards and still lose...

And Alex Smith happens to be mediocre in every single category you mentioned there.

The lack of 300 yard games for Alex is due not only to his lack of talent, but also due to the lack of confidence our coaches have in Alex's ability.

We already see Singletary throwing around the word "game manager" to describe Alex Smith. The coaches simply don't trust him. Not after he had four turnovers against the Titans to cost us that game.

Peyton Manning threw for 300+ yards in his NFL start
Tom Brady threw for 300+ yards in his 4th NFL start
Tim Couch threw for 300+ yards in his 17th NFL start
David Carr threw for 300+ yards in his 21st NFL start

Alex Smith has 33 starts so far without a 300 yard passing game.

there's a simple explanation : throws you make to the other team (called "interception" or "INT") don't count in your yards stats
Else he would have made it past 300 yards quite quickly ...

stupid...

yep. An effective game manager is actually the ceiling for Alex. So we are either going to draft a bunch of HOF'ers around him or come to terms with the fact the Niners don't compete for Ships

So what youre saying is, if Brady played for this team right now and started against the Packers next week, the offence would suddenly flourish and he would pass for 400 yards because the coaches have confidence???

Not necessarily 400 yards, but absolutely. Not necessarily even Tom Brady. Kurt Warner would have led us to a 12-4 record.

We have weapons. We have Crabtree. We have Vernon. We have Frank Gore.

Alex Smith is holding us back.

you clearly didn't watch the early Championships of the Pats. Minus Bill Belichick and add Tom Brady, this team compares pretty well to that team. We actually have better receivers maybe.
f**k ya!!!

Kurt Warner will magically save the oline. He will make us great, like he did with the giants. No one player makes a team.

I pretend to hate the draft of Alex...but I really liked it. To be honest, we were going to suck either way.....this way though I get to brag and bash on the interwebz for 5 years and counting because of this clown

Hey Cortez, now your comparing Smith with Shaun Hill. We all know Hill sucks, so whats your point. We have to set higher standards for our Qb play. Some of you either forget, or never seen a good QB before. We play Alex the rest of the season, to see if he can work this out. This is his second time around, he has had every excuse to back him up, and one that stands out "he's still learning" tells me he just isnt a natural quarterback. Some things have to be brought with you, he still has to learn them. Give me one reason Alex is a good quarterback. After five years.
