2. Running game and ball control. Yes Frank gore had a 64 yard run for the TD. Take that away and he is 12 carries for 27 yards. We basically have no running game hence no ball control and no balanced offense.
3. Overall the defense played excellent. However, the inability to stop key plays on 3rd down in the late stages of the game killed us. Look what Dallas Clark did. Chalk this up to experience and coaching on the Colts side.
The team has gotten much better in the passing game, but we just can't control the ball on the ground.
Bill Walsh used the passing game to open up the run. I'm convinced we can do the same, if Smith can continue to deliver and Raye and Singletary will allow Smith to turn it loose a little more often.
We're right on the edge of complete and total team meltdown right now. I'm not sure if we're at "turn it loose" at this point, but if the powers that be decide to take the leash off after we're out of the running -- and it works -- you're going to have some mighty upset people in the front office.
