This has been a pretty good conversation to read. Up to this point, I've been pretty adamant in my opinion of coach Singletary and his neanderthal approach to football. And I'm just as frustrated as the rest of you with the outcome of todays game. But I honestly don't think that firing Sing is the best thing for the team at this time or even at the end of this season. After watching the recording of the Indy game, as well as the previous two games, I've got to agree that the players do really play hard for Singletary. I believe our schedule makes it possible to win 5 to 7 more games this season. I know that sounds nuts, but I think this is an 8 or 9 win team at this juncture. I don't know if that will be good enough to get us into the playoffs this year, we'll have to wait and see.
There are some obvious talent gaps in certain positions, and those will continue to be approached in the off-season. But I wonder if this coach (or front office), would consider bringing in an advisor that could work with Singletary on how to quit being a high school motivator and start being an NFL coach. One that possesses a strategic approach to the game. One that understands what his assistant coaches are doing when they draw up plays and game plans.
All Singletary has really had to learn from was one year under Billick and then.....Nolan. If Singletary can bring himself to grow in his job, and accept tutoring from a more established coach, then he still might be the guy to bring San Francisco back from our football hell. If not then I am all for replacing him, and starting over.....AGAIN!

Singletary is not the right coach for this team

I don't think you can afford to give passes to your head coach...the competition is too high in the NFL to settle for mediocre. While Coach has brought what he can, he's simply overmmatched by most of his peers. To be fair, the maladies this team suffers from aren't all Singletary's fault, nor McCloughan's. But, they're the guys acquiring and coaching players, so they're accountable. Singletary was an emotional head coaching choice...because ownership either decided it was better to keep the status quo or they naively thought he had the right stuff to get back a winning tradition.
My solution is to replace Singletary after the season...with Mike Shanahan. Why? It should be obvious, but the big deal is our anemic offense. Shanahan will fix it, once and for all. While I understand management would be leery of giving any head coach control like Nolan had, that's what would get a fix in place sooner rather than later. The man will fix our OL...which just about all of us agree is a weak spot. He'll also beef up our RB corps...his track record speaks for itself. He'll install an innovative offense, taking advantage of all our talent. In short, he's a winner and he'd bring back the realistic playoff expectations we haven't had in too many years.

I've been saying for a long time he is a fraud. He is singFRAUD. All smoke and mirrors and motivational dropped pants speeches. He cuts our KR / PR and puts one of our best players back to return kicks. Now Nate is out for the season... It all could have been avoided if we had a KR / PR and we did. We cut him so we could save roster spots for TASER guys and BENCHWARMERS.
You explain it me?
This guy is all motivational speeches and RAH, RAH PEP RALLY TIMEOUTS. Where are the X's and O's? Where is the offensive philosophy that suits the personnel we have? What is going on with the personnel management? Cut good players to keep benchwarmers. Play Guards over and over who can't block. Put one of your best players back on kick return duty and get him hurt for the year. This from the self described "will be the greatest coach in history".....
I agree 100% that it was stupid to put Clements as a punt returner and to have cut Rossum. I also hate the offensive play calling. HOWEVER, I also like the fact that Singletary gets this team to play hard on the road. We used to get smoked everytime we were the visiting team. Arizona, Minnesota, Houston, Indy... all great efforts by the team. Can you imagine this team playing against those teams with Mike Nolan as head coach?
Singletary will grow as a coach. I think he will get better. I like the attitude of this team. Better days are ahead.
So now we "play hard and lose." OH JOY.
Well considering that Minnesota is 7-1 and beat us on a fluke and Indy is undefeated, I would say that our young team did pretty damn well. Would we all like to have won? Of course. So would every other team that has played these elite NFL teams. The Niners are making progress from one of the worst teams in the NFL under Nolan to a team that is a contender under Singletary.
We are 6 - 1 when you count VICTORIES + MORAL VICTORIES in the ownship BOX. Forget 3 - 4. The Minnesota game was close (that's a win). The Houston game we almost came back (an ownership win again). The Indy game we played tough and close (that's a win against the amazing COLTS). The 49ers are really 6 - 1.
If you dont see the progress the team has made in the past year and a half under Singletary then its impossible to debate this with you. Yes, the Niners could easily be 5-2 instead of 3-4 and its frustrating that we didnt win those games. However, I just dont see how you cannot acknowledge that Singletary has done a good job of turning the attitude around and having them at least have a shot and winning games against the elite NFL teams.
Right on John. I agree.Sing' is doing a heck of a job.If Sing' didnt do anything different but we won all our games,we would'nt even be reading this, who's the right coach. The man has just started a full season as HC. The fact remains we're relatively a young team, thats gaining its competetive edge back.Even if we lose. All loses suck. Thats the nature of the game. Every team in the NFL since its beginning has gone thru this kinda phase before. PATIENCE!!!!! It'll come back around again. As of right now Sing' is the MAN!!!

You can't beat the Colts playing not to lose. There will be 5 all star coaches available in 2010 (if Fisher does in fact leave). Lets get a proven winner. Singletary was a nice story but its starting to look like a lot of smoke and mirrors. Bash me if you want but the NFL today is about teams that can throw the football.
This is more about the GM than the coach. Sing is a rookie HC so he gets a pass, our GM has been there for years and our talent level still is bad.
MS had half of last year, don't forget. He is not a rookie in my book, especially with his history. He now has a full year under his belt not to mention he was assistant HC.
I'm not willing to say fire the man now, but since he is the BIG mouthpiece and basically the face of the team, he needs to take control and be able to ADJUST schemes to beat other teams, things like that.
All he really needs to sucedd more now; is a good OC and the abilty to SEE and USE schemes that fit the palyers he has now. We all know this but WTF!
What about our receivers coach or Rathman..
The Viking, Texan and Colts losses to me, are more on the head of the HC for not being able to adapt, and palying to NOT lose. Look at Belicheat and the best HC; they adapt, and by god, they win. Like MS says, "why should I pound a round peg in a square hole", yet there he was today, doin it again..
BTW- That 2 running back and 2 TE set, is NOT a spread, it is a failure..
That's my 3 cents..

Maybe i'm wrong, but isn't it Mcloughlan that makes the decision on who gets cut.

After coach sing made is famous 5 commands, i had a talk with my psychic to take a look in the future and make my own commands of predictions (in order of appearance)
Here's my list and feel free to show yours :
1- Be persistent
2- Fail on offense
3- Miss the playoffs
4- Keep Raye
5- See point 1
I found irony is a way that help dealing with adversity and hopeless situations
Everybody's welcomed on my bandwagon but haters (= those not subtile enough to see the difference between irony and sarcasm)
PS: the characters described in this post are not imaginary. If they resemble the story of true livings it's because they actually exist. Any comparaison (points 1 to 3) to another story dating to 2007 and a guy named hostler and nolan is purely fortuitous ... NOT
Enjoy yesterday today and tomorrow
GO NINERS !

Also, we must finish. By "we," I mean the players. It's their job to finish. The coaches don't have to finish, only the players do.
Memo to Sing and Raye. YOU have to finish. YOU have to call right plays and get the players in the right situations to FINISH. They can't do that when Moran Norris is handling 2nd-and-7 duties, putting them in yet another 3rd-and-long situation. I honestly think that the coaches are just overwhelmed right now. You have a HC who wants to run the ball and a team that is better suited to pass the ball, and it's just not making any sense right now. We have to get on the same page.

Manusky is gonna be a head coach soon. As bad as I hate to say it, I'd rather have Manusky here than keep Sing and his stubbornness.

I think he is the right coach. He just needs to learn that we are not the running team that he wants us to be. Our Oline moves better when we pass the ball. I hope he figures this out when he watches the video of the past two games. We need to be a pass first team to open up the ground game.

Yes we where lucky Indy didn't bring their A game, but the fact is we could have and should have beaten Indy on this day and we didn't because of the play calling. Thats it. Whether Indy is a better team or not has nothing to do with it really.
Did it ever occur to you that the reason they didn't play well is because we did? They are a better team than we are and that has everything to do with it, that is why they won. It wasn't like Manning was making mistakes because he was off today, our defense played lights out for most of the day. There are mistakes that need to be corrected, but we do have a really young team, and there will be growing pains. I think we are a lot closer to being able to beat these top teams than we have been in years. Hopefully Turner gets canned in San Diego and we can get him to come back and call plays for us. We are on the way to being one of those top tier teams, we only need a safety, a couple of solid OL, and a pass rusher.
Aside from the bold I agree with everything you said. This team has the talent to compete with some very good teams and the ability to beat them if they dont bring their very best.
With that said, did you get to watch the game on TV? I'm assuming because your name is MemphisNiner that you dont get the Niners on your local station? The reality is Manning wasn't nearly as accurate as he usually is. A number of times our CBs got beat but he just missed the throw and it didn't appear to have anything to do with pressure. I think our defense played great, but if I was being honest some of it looked like Manning was having an off day.
