I love PTI. Trust me, if Alex does well they will be MORE than happy to bust on each other for being all wrong about him. Let's be honest, we were all stunned by his performance. I hope the kid knocks 'em dead!

Alex is like that girlfriend that u know she could be a keeper if she only did this, or fixed this, or stopped this but its tough to tell. We all want to see him work out so we wont feel like idiots for drafting him. Niner fans be aware be careful with your feelings this time around cuz he might break our hearts again. I hope it works so we can be back where we belong and thats on top of the NFL. Hopefully he can be that San Francisco treat we need him to be. Go Niners!!!

It's called having writers and daily rehearsals.

I wasn't stunned. I knew he would do much better than Shaun Hill. I didn't know he would be that much better, but I wouldn't say I was stunned by it. Smith did have some success in 2006.

Why do we even care about these guys? You do know that it goes like this:
producer: alright Tony you are against Alex Smith so find supporting stuff.

Eh, it's more like they rehearse their own opinions. I doubt their producers decide their opinions for them.

The question is what are you're realistic expectations for Smith and I think that's where the mix up is occurring.
Are you saying that Alex Smith throwing for 200 yards and 3 TDs in one half is a trick? Of course it is. If you think Smith is going to average those stats week in and week out than you're going to be sorely disappointed. Our offensive line in it's current state will never allow that to happen even if Smith was capable of doing that on a consistent basis.
BUT that doesn't mean Alex Smith from here on out won't be a quality productive QB. To me he showed a lot of things that he's never shown before that has nothing to do with what defense Houston played or what plays where called. He got the ball out quickly, had improved footwork, balls were accurate and well placed, had good pocket presence, and showed solid decision making and poise.
It was almost like having a completely different QB out there which give me some hope for the future. You might get sloppy with your mechanics but once you learn them you don't wake up and just plain forget them one day.

why is everyone saying "if smith doesn't do well we should draft another qb" That is Ridiculous, we have a very promising qb. Forget that we drafted nate davis. He has skills and intangibles that can not be taught.

We also need to prepare for the flood of "Why can't we have a QB like Peyton?!" threads.
there is no QB "like" Peyton, and I don't think there ever will be. It makes sense since he isn't even human...

I would so desperately love smith to pan out because it would mean we have a legit starting caliber nfl qb on the roster. there are an abundance of side issues too such as it would mean we actually made a good draft pick, etc...but bottom line him panning out would answer a huge question mark that we have had to suffer thru for 6-7 years now.
that said, he is a trick....he has not once in his whole career shown that he could ever on his best day amount to a treat. on his best day, he was trent dilfer's backup. i let myself get suckered into believing he might actually become something one too many times. this last time i actually thought there might be something to it. he had lost a firend, had a fair bit of turbulence in his personal life to where maybe, just maybe, he had grown up some and gotten tuff and life had slowed down enuf for him for him to handle what's on his plate. then came preseason and yet again, alex smith does what alex smith does best, chokes all over the opportunities that are giftwrapped to him.
it takes too much to make alex smith work as a nfl starting qb and i fear this sunday, yet again, we are in for some pure ugliness. even now, yet again, remembering his performance last week i find myself getting suckered in yet again but when you think about it calmly and rationally, the qb that will hopefully one day lead us back to the playoffs doesnt reside on our roster. and yeah, can we stop being dumb ignorant fanboys that feel nate davis is our future?
all that said, ive added this statement before, i'll add it again, for the sake of being a winner again, i'll swallow whatever crow anyone wants me to swallow. i'll take whatever finger pointing that needs to be done if my opinion is wrong. for a few weeks this year, it felt sooooo good to think we might be legit again. i remember my brother calling me wanting to talk about looking ahead that we may lose this or have issues with that, what do we do once in the playoffs and what not. at that point i told him, this feeling has been a long time coming, enjoy it a bit, bask in it,we have suffered long enuf. A few weeks later, that feeling is exhausted and tempered brutally by the fact of 'oh no we suck again'...if alex smith can get me back to feeling what i felt those first few weeks, awesome, sign me up...i just dont think he can do it...we live in az, its insufferable to have to tolerate all this cardinals crap, i just want to be good again. for those first few weeks, there was nothing better then digging out all the old gear and wearing it around town and walking loud and pround with your chest pumped up higher then the sky...
wow, what a mindless rant...i'll still post it

I hate Kornheiser.
He is hoping that now that his snoulder is better... that he will be a treat because he has Crabtree in his Fantasy League.
Kent was calling him a treat saying that he is loving his touch passes and velocity... and the way he was getting the ball to Vernon Davis...
These guys are jokes... but the first time I've seen anything Niner related on the Rundown in a while...
So far, Alex hasn't done anything tangible yet.
I can't stand Cornhole. When he did MNF it was like someone was scratching their nails down the chalk board 16 Mondays in a row, year after year. One time he had the audacity to argue with Jaworski about the technicalities of playing QB. That guy was a moronic opinionated blow hard. But damn if he wasn't marginally better than having to listen to Dennis Miller try to impress everyone with useless self-important obscurity. I literally had to stop watching MNF when that guy was there.
Come to think of it... MNF announcers havn't been very good at all for a long time.
MNF announcers by year

Hey, awesome post! I'm right there with everything you said.
RE: Alex Smith hype from Texans game. He hasn't done anything yet to deserve the hype. So he showed up in the second half of a game we were losing big and made some plays. That's all he's ever done except for one time (ONE TIME) on the road against the Seahawks.
RE: Potential. That's all you ever hear about that guy. I certainly hope now that some time has passed that he's made that step to the next level. He did look pretty good last week. Admittedly, he looked good and gave some reason for hope. Last week he showed improvement in two key areas that he needed to improve:
1. Getting the ball out quicker.
2. Accurate short passes.
My gut feeling is that he'll play better this season than his overall average has been. I've seen some things in 2 meaningless quarters that suggest he may surpass my lowered expectations of him. And I certainly hope that he does turn out to be a great QB as well.
PS: I live in AZ too. I always sport my 49ers stuff. Win or lose.

He has shown a couple of times that he is capable of being a legit NFL QB. I think that many here expected too much from such a young QB on such a s**tty team, leading to bitter fans blaming it all on Smith. I have been a niner fan for thirty years and the 2005 team was the absolute worst one I have ever seen. The team now is miles ahead of that team, so now we should be able to finally see what Smith is made of. We all want what is best for the niners, and if Smith is a legit NFL starter, then we should all be happy, all of us that can be(I know there are some that will never be).
