Another oddity I ran across is that in 1980, Walsh would put Montana in for 1 or 2 series a game -- then take him out (it seems kind of out of sync w. the rythmic syle of the Walsh system). Joe didn't even become the start until the amazing comeback win against the Saints that year.

note: not trying to make compare Smith to Montana.
