I actually thought this was one of the better games Alex has had in his career.

Let me get the only two negatives out of the way.

1. Pass to Bruce: yes we all know, it was a look to the right and he quickly came back to the middle for his second read. Alex NEVER showed this much quickness in between reads and the throw. It almost seemed like he rushed the throw but it was nice to see him look to the right, and quickly come back to a medium depth route to the middle rather than looking deep only or short only.

2. The turnaround scramble. Alex should have trusted his blocking better as Coffee and M. Rob picked up the quick penetration in middle VERY well. If Smith didn't turn around into the DE, then he would have had a nice pocket and probably a wide open man somewhere.

3. He hurt himself. You can make all the excuses you want, but this is happening to him too much.

Positives:

1. He actually looked off the defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You don't even know how much of an improvement this is. The pass to Vernon, you could see Alex look off to the slot receiver and this got Vernon open even more. However, would've like to see him lead Vernon a little better to pick up more RAC.

2. Shifted in the pocket very well. Aside from his turnaround scramble (shakes head), he shifted VERY well in the pocket and actually looked comfortable. I didn't think he had this in him and the looking the defense off, making a quick second read, and now this!!!!! These are things I thought he would never show and he actually showed it. If he keeps it up, he may be ready next year.

3. Showed major "I don't give a s**t" attitude. Anyone can layout a man who isn't looking but I liked how Alex stood over him and punked him. I know it isn't the right thing to do, but it is when you need to get some swagger. Also, very nice tackle on the INT that wasn't his fault.

4. Dropped passes made him look terrible. Yes, if he rifles a ball in there, he must hit the chest and not above the head.

It its really difficult for most of us to assess individual interior players because that takes both a replay device and a technical understanding of what a player's assignment is and what the technique is to carry it out.

Thanks again for your assessments. I to would like to get your evaluations of the various players and schemes. I would like to get your thoughts on each of the linemen, some thoughts on their development, which linemen would play best together, the OC perspectives, and what you see happening for the niners.

Hey Oldman, you are a bright addition to this crazy place. Your susinct snippets of the plays allows one an insider's look to how they develop and how the team played.

This kind of analysis doesn't come along that often. I for one am very grateful for you and your contribution to this site. Seriously, I have deep respect for your gift to us.

Wow, really glad that others are getting something out of this other than just myself... thanks. As for overall, individual assessments, I'll see what I can do, and I wish my free time was limitless to be even more informative.

I know it's TV and i couldn't see the whole field but did anyone else notice the crossing routes coming open in the middle of the field. I remember twice when Alex would duck out of the pocket someone come open in the middle of the field, or at least it seemed they were open. Also the interception was a bad decision. Morgan was five yards from the 1st down and it seemed as if VD was about to come open.

Anyway these are reasons why Hill needs to start and why Alex needs to ride the bench and watch for awhile. Hill throws the receiver open while Alex has to see the separation. By the way i'm not a smith hater in fact i watched the Raider game with my Smith jersey on.
