Are the 49ers Running the Correct Defensive Scheme to Fit This Team?

I know it was only preseason game 1, but yet again, we see a lack of pass rush by our defense and our defensive line looked as if it was getting swallowed up! This got me thinking... Are the 49ers running the correct scheme to fit this team? In my opinion, I think we should be using a 4-3 scheme.

Ok so it may be a bit early, but its still a good question! I was wondering the same thing last season.

I can't believe this now the 3rd year where I've had to type this, but our D has a frustrating lack of key pieces for both 3-4 and the 4-3. We still don't have a true NT (now they're saying they want Franklin to penetrate rather than occupy blockers) or a QB killing OLB. But we also don't have any 4-3 DEs, since all our DEs are 300 pound guys that work in a 3-4. So, even though I'm as frustrated as anyone else that we still haven't acquired the most important pieces to the 3-4 puzzle, I'd rather we stick to the 3-4. I think we're closer to being able to play that than a 4-3.

I believe we are. Can't see how your basing it off of one Preseason game, when the defense lit it up in the second half of the year. We were on our way to a rank 32 defense till Singletary and Manusky took over, simple-gap 3-4.

i like the 3-4 better than the 4-3 but youre acting like the 3-4 got us pressure on the qb last season. unfortunately i dont think our d is going to be great no matter which d we go with until we get a monster defensive tackle. if we go 4-3 wed still need albert haynesworth type player. right now we need a casey hampton/vince wilfork type player or a jay ratliff type player.

I've had these same thoughts, But we don't have the right personal for the 4-3.No NT to speak of plus the rest of the D-line is best suited for the 3-4. The D looked real good towards the last half of last season so I'm willing to wait till the regular season gets under way to pass any judgments.
Although its just preseason and I believe the coaching staff is holding the D back to keep injuries down,I would like to see the D be much more aggressive in all phases. Which I think our D is best suited for anyway.They got the speed and power playing soft does not suit them at all IMO.

Our players fit in the 3-4. We have some gret individual talents on our D. However, we do need a pass rush and a stout DT. Unforutnately, our main problem is bad play calling and scheming the other teams offense. We do not generate a pass rush and all of the DB play soft (off on the wide-outs). Our defense is so bad that you can not single one person out. This is normally a result of bad coaching.

I don't think we would get any more pressure on the QB running the 4-3 then we don't get running the 3-4...
