So much of our inability to pass the ball falls on the O Line today. They looked like crap. Almost every single time he dropped back Alex had someone in his face within the first two seconds.
You can't succeed like that.
OUR O LINE SUCKS!

AH, the real root of this teams problems.
This team never seems to be prepared when the game starts. It's always at the half that they make adjustments and suddenly get into the game.
The old addage of "practices makes perfect", that falls on the coachs.
Remember when Nolan was hired it was his first Head Coaching job [a real head scratcher for the most part] and he assembled the coaching staff with all of the castoffs and un-wanteds that he could manage to get.

If you think this loss was solely on the QB, then you didn't pay attention to the game.
What exactly has Alex done to secure his job for next year? McCloughan and Singletary have yet to announce him the starter for next year, so why are you convinced otherwise?
Everybody sees the problems with the lack of pass rush, the OL, the secondary, and return game, but why does the QB position get a free pass when QB is the most important position on the field?
Alex has three wins this year and two of the wins came from horrific performances by Cutler and Warner and yet those games were still close.
With the NFL being catered to QBs and offenses, you'd think that Alex would have an easier path to success but he's done nothing.
But I guess if Alex lights up the Div II squads, the Lions and the Rams, he's the answer right?
Did the Chargers decide against Philip Rivers because Ryan Leaf sucks or did Atlanta pass on Matt Ryan because they were afraid to draft another QB after Mike Vick? No.

I was saying the same thing Lambda.
Honestly tho, i dont know about anyone else, but even if it was just for the past few weeks. It felt good just having even the smallest bit for a post season. You know at the end of last season, it was like lets make the best of the season. And at the end of this one, even if for a second, we all thought even if by a long shot that maybe we can make it. Even the Haters were on board, even tho their hate always shine each week regardless.
Thats why i say if we stick with what we have now, and tweak the line, then we should do great things next year, with a second year in the same offensive system.

I still hold onto hope that we bring in a quality vet; but, I wouldn't be too upset if Alex is the starter as long as were continuing to develop the position... I don't know much about Davis, except for what I saw in the preseason. He looks like he has the tools, but needs to learn the O (and I hear he has a learning disability so I don't know how well he'll do). If Davis proves to be a quality backup and can push Alex then I say we pick up another low round QB that we can also develop.
As for the loss, We played a better team today and gave it our best Shot. This was less of a loss for us as it was a win for Philly IMO (I mean we were expected to lose)...
His learning disability doesn't mean he'll be a bad QB. Lots of successful QBs have had learning disabilities. (Terry Bradshaw for one!)

This. Smith had a bad game but the root of our problems is our horrible OL. It needs serious work during the off season if we want to become legit contenders next year.

I still wish he would have just threw it.....let something funky happen...it was 4th down and the season....better try something than take a sack.
Like he did in the first half for the INT?
it was 4th down....you are letting your blindness affect your posting....
4th down...season on the line.... I didn't expect him to complete it but EVERYONE KNOWS YOU THROW THE BALL UP, you do not take a sack...even if you are getting tackled you throw the ball somewhere...
that play just shows that he let those INTs affect his play at the end of the game....he was too worried about turning the ball over that he even took a sack instead of getting rid of the ball on 4th down....we are down by 14pts... you LET GO OF THE F'n BALL....
seriously.... he should have got rid of the ball as soon as he hit is last drop, but he didn't....I know someone was coming at him...but he was not getting hit on that last step...that is when you throw the ball.
He basically got hit after less than a second and you think he should have been able to throw it?
again, you are letting your bias affect your posting....watch the play again, it was not less than a second....
again...he dropped back and at that last step had an opportunity to throw the ball...but he tried to evade the oncoming rusher....he should have threw it on that last step....while the rush was getting ready to hit him...
I agree with Afrikan... You throw the ball up.
IMO this is a inexperience issue.
Ditto... err make that Tritto.
4th down you may not have another possession unless you score and onsides? You throw it up and hope it sticks to the the Receiver.
I blame the staff for that one. Bad play call.
~Ceadder
And the blitz pickup... Come on line, you know there gonna be commin. give a guy a couple of seconds.
IMO total O fail on that one.
I don't blame the Line on that. Jim Johnson's blitz packages are EXACTLY how I would run my Blitz packages if I were a DC. I'ma knock ya in the chops all day long til ya burn me. And if you do burn me then I'm gonna increase the pressure and you won't know if you're getting a Corner a Spike Dog a Doubly Gap Z penetrator. All you know is your line is gonna look like a Voodoo doll after they get stuck so many times. My issue with the Line was that when they had the Iggles spread out they just COLLAPSED with very little Pass Rush.
Frank should have picked up 21 who stunted the gap on one of the pass plays and Alex was sacked in less than the ideal 3 seconds.
This game has me so ticked off that I probably won;t even listen to Steve this week cause I know that he's going to once again openly criticize Smith for everything even the stuff that he has ZERO control over. I have a big problem with that. He LIVES in the area. It's not like he can't talk to Alex and say look dude I feel your pain but...

Player in next years draft that would've improved our chances the most today:
CJ Spiller.
He is the playmaker we need in the return game and on the offense.
+ 1
Anyone else disagree? Didn't think so.
I do...O line is much of a bigger problem..
And you don't think a return man should be one of our top priorities? Were you satisfied with the field position today? I would hope not! When you have a chance at a playmaker, you take it. Yes, I agree that the O-line should be our top concern this off-season, but a special teams return man should be right up there as well.
Field position is important, but I agree that the O-line is a bigger problem. I watched the end of the GB game and I saw how much time Rodgers had to throw. I imagined what Alex could do with that kind of time.
Look at the time McNabb had today....... We need lineman that can give the QB time, more than we need a return specialist.

QB doesn't get a free pass. He gets a get out of Jail free card cause h's gotten beaten to a bloody pulp behind EVERY line he's stood under Center at.
SO if you wish to consider it a free pass that's fine. I call it paying your dues. And I guess it's open to interpretation what exactly has he paid. Well he's back and blue and has helped make this Offensive unit relevant again. Can't neglect that.

McNabb had all day cause his entire Line hardly ever got called for holding in this game.

We don't need some rookie QB. That will only set us back even more. In regards to the QBs in this draft, they are questionable at best. What we need is continuity. What we need is stability. We need to stick with Alex. We need to fix the 49ers offensive line! No matter who our QB is, if they don't have the protection and time to throw the football, they will never be affective!
