Understand this...to be the best you dont just have to make plays...you have to be able to influence others into making them as wellthrough thorough leadership and knowledge of the overall aspects of the game.
Which is something that, regardless of age, Ray Lewis is still fully capable of doing while still getting big numbers.
I will definitely be comfortable with saying Patrick Willis is the best after he goes through at least 16 successful team defensive games with the radio AND as the captain. That will tell me that he has arrived not only as a complete football player, but a true leader as well who can basically QB the defense himself. Which, like it or not, Lewis can still do and Willis cannot.

There is a big difference between talking trash and being a QB of a defense. Lewis is to a defense what Peyton Manning is to an offense, and I'm sorry you just cant say that about Willis right now.
I tell you...if someone says that a player on the 49ers isnt the best...boy do these people get up in arms.
Especially if some "expert" on TV says so...I'm sure its gospel...
Then again because Woodson is a hall of famer...that makes everything he says true...even though he was the exact same guy who said Mike Nolan derseved better from the 49ers. But whatever...at any rate...
I love Willis...I think he has a chance to be better than Ray Lewis ever was...but as of right now, there is no other player in the NFL I'd rather have leading my defense than Lewis. Willis is a VERY close #2. He i
for sure. since we are 49er fans here though lets hope willis is the best this year and till he retires. #2 or#3 in others opinions... always gonna be #1 in my book. when all is said and done he'll be what our kids and grandkids will look upto and will be hall of fame best of all time just like jerry and joe was.

Willis is a VERY close #2. He is where Ray Lewis was before Lewis became a student of the game. For the UPTEENTH time.

Well guess what.......... willis is number 1!
in rod woodson's eyes, my eyes and the majority of the zoners eyes. Now while i dont take this hall of famers words as gospel they most certainly hold alot more weight then somebody sitting behind a computer screen with a dozen or so posts on a fan forum.
and i could have sworn this was woodson from the NFL network's top 5 mlb's not reasonable1's top 5.
thanks for playin

First off I never gave a top 5...I just disagreed with the #1 choice.
Listen I know its hard to listen to an opinion other than someone who has played...but I am a football coach at the minor league level (semi-pro as most would know it).
There is no substitute for a guy who just knows the game...PERIOD. Its funny, but you're acting like I'm saying Willis aint sh*t...I'm not...but the fact remains is that the kid is only in his 3rd year. I know Willis will be the best...but now in his 2nd year in the same defense with the same DC...I fully expect him to evolve into that #1 guy he is regarded as. But right now he is not...and that's ok...you dont enter that level of football as automatically the best there is. He will be though and fast.
To the other poster...I never said Lewis wore the radio...I said I would like to see Willis do it for a full season and have success as a unit before I would crown him as the best.
Reed, if I'm not mistaken took over the radio duties last year. But it still does not replace Lewis as the beginning and end of that defense.
