Yeah, vote for me!

See... I bet I could lay a "WOO LICK" too!

DAYUM
I distinctly remember saying he was a VERY close #2.

Understand this...to be the best you dont just have to make plays...you have to be able to influence others into making them as wellthrough thorough leadership and knowledge of the overall aspects of the game.

Which is something that, regardless of age, Ray Lewis is still fully capable of doing while still getting big numbers.

I will definitely be comfortable with saying Patrick Willis is the best after he goes through at least 16 successful team defensive games with the radio AND as the captain. That will tell me that he has arrived not only as a complete football player, but a true leader as well who can basically QB the defense himself. Which, like it or not, Lewis can still do and Willis cannot.
No brainer.

i agree that ray lewis is a beast. but if you calculate his performance to his mouth ratio. his mouth has done way more last year then his performance. he has two other linebackers actually that out played him last year and if you watch any of patrick willis's highlites when he is mic'd up that guy has alot to say. alot of times it's not a person being vocal that leads the team! it's the one putting it on the field that makes the impact. he may never become the wild and out loud mouth that alot of linebackers are. but we all well know he's done way more then what we had expected from him in 2 years. alot of big mouths in the league. (example JOEY PORTER) but that doesn't make you the best inside LINEBACKER!

watch this video yo! to those who say he aint a vocal leader. he says what he has to. but his play is LOUD!
hip hip horay...!
but did we need them to tell us we have the best ILB in the NFL?

There is a big difference between talking trash and being a QB of a defense. Lewis is to a defense what Peyton Manning is to an offense, and I'm sorry you just cant say that about Willis right now.

I tell you...if someone says that a player on the 49ers isnt the best...boy do these people get up in arms.

Especially if some "expert" on TV says so...I'm sure its gospel...

Then again because Woodson is a hall of famer...that makes everything he says true...even though he was the exact same guy who said Mike Nolan derseved better from the 49ers. But whatever...at any rate...

I love Willis...I think he has a chance to be better than Ray Lewis ever was...but as of right now, there is no other player in the NFL I'd rather have leading my defense than Lewis. Willis is a VERY close #2. He is where Ray Lewis was before Lewis became a student of the game. For the UPTEENTH time.

for sure. since we are 49er fans here though lets hope willis is the best this year and till he retires. #2 or#3 in others opinions... always gonna be #1 in my book. when all is said and done he'll be what our kids and grandkids will look upto and will be hall of fame best of all time just like jerry and joe was.
With Manusky able to run the defense FREELY, except even MORE big things from Patrick Willis. I am so glad we got this beast. Now thats what top first round pick should look like

Well guess what.......... willis is number 1!

in rod woodson's eyes, my eyes and the majority of the zoners eyes. Now while i dont take this hall of famers words as gospel they most certainly hold alot more weight then somebody sitting behind a computer screen with a dozen or so posts on a fan forum.

and i could have sworn this was woodson from the NFL network's top 5 mlb's not reasonable1's top 5.

thanks for playin

First off I never gave a top 5...I just disagreed with the #1 choice.

Listen I know its hard to listen to an opinion other than someone who has played...but I am a football coach at the minor league level (semi-pro as most would know it).

There is no substitute for a guy who just knows the game...PERIOD. Its funny, but you're acting like I'm saying Willis aint sh*t...I'm not...but the fact remains is that the kid is only in his 3rd year. I know Willis will be the best...but now in his 2nd year in the same defense with the same DC...I fully expect him to evolve into that #1 guy he is regarded as. But right now he is not...and that's ok...you dont enter that level of football as automatically the best there is. He will be though and fast.

To the other poster...I never said Lewis wore the radio...I said I would like to see Willis do it for a full season and have success as a unit before I would crown him as the best.

Reed, if I'm not mistaken took over the radio duties last year. But it still does not replace Lewis as the beginning and end of that defense.
BTW...

When I said there is no sub for a guy who knows the game I was referring to Ray Lewis...not myself.

I see there are people who like to insert words where they see fit, so I needed to clarify that.

Thanks for your opinion! You said it yourself right in the bolded that he will be #1 this year! So we agree....... yeah!

but for the upteenth time..haha... Willis was choosen #1 Lewis was not. Your reasoning for what willis needs to do to be number 1 doesnt hold water. He had a higher defensive production around a substantially less talented defensive unit then the Ravens with Reed (arguably the best defensive player in the NFL who has been wearing the radio as long as it has been aloud on D), Nagta, Suggs and Scott. Willis's stock is quickly rising being only in his 3rd year while Lewis's is quickly falling with his age.

AP is going into his 3rd year and there is no doubt he is the best RB in the game right now. (and dont give me that RB and LB are 2 totally different positions)

The niners D revolves around 52 and it goes as he goes, he might not be leading with his mouth but he sure as hell leads with his play.

Just say it man Willis is number 1...... just do it... you know you want to!!

Higher INDIVIDUAL defensive production, you're right.

But where the overall progressions of those respect defenses rank...Lewis is hands down your #1.

One of the things I had to learn in being a coach was that talent truly comes second to knowing the game like the back of you hand.

Willis is getting there...Lewis has been there and still is there. Willis is physically the most gifted player in football...PERIOD...BUT he has a little ways to go before being the best...thats all. And that is ok...
