But he absolutely didn't have to. He could have just as easily said another player was most underrated. And from the article, it seems he wasn't the only one who agreed.

Justin Smith seems to be pulling his weight. Hopefully the other DE spot can start putting some pressure on the opposing offense. Add on a possible surgence from Manny Lawson rushing the passer and things should start to look good. Pressure and sacks on the QB causes turnovers. Getting off the field on 3rd down never hurts either. Keep the defense fresh. Extend our own offensive drives with a run oriented offense which will wear down their defense. Win the game... Okay, I got a little off track. Sorry.
Dude the d line in the 3-4 we play doesn't pressure the qb primarily, they occupy the blockers so the bad ass linebackers we have can get after the ball.I mean come on now, read the article already,it is self explanatory.

So if this is true, which I'm not saying it isn't, what was up with all the people (including the coaching staff) calling for a beefy NT?
Based on what Spikes said, you gotta think our NT issues are solved. I'm sure Spikes has forgotten more football than anyone one on this board could ever claim to know.
I can't wait to unleash the D next year. A whole offseason of practicing under coach Sing. Other teams better be prepared to be punched in the mouth.

Franklin is an awful 3-4 NT, I'm sorry. He may have raised his level of suck at the end of the season, but he is a huge liability on the majority of snaps. He anchors poorly, gets taken out of running lanes, and offers no push or penetration to collapse the QB's pocket. He is unworthy of a double team, and makes me angry on gameday.
Takeo and Co. are just trying to push some confidence his way, and any time one thinks of underrated, NT is the first position thought of. Anyone who has really taken full focus of the NT spot last season knows damn well that Franklin is the epitome of suck-NT.

I pay close attention to the Oline and the Dline whenever I watch Niner games. I can not recall Aubrayo Franklin being anything close to a pro bowl player. I can definitely recall watching him get blocked like crazy. I'd rather have Sopoaga in the middle, manning the nose tackle position.

TAKEO SPIKES:"You see runs up the middle and the running back will cut it back; Aubrayo will make the play but not make the tackle," Spikes said. "The running back will have to cut it back because of his presence. He's one of the best nose guards I've seen who manhandles the center."
OLDMAN9ER: "He's an awful NT."
I'll go with Spikes. That doesn't seem like "gloss" to me. It seems pretty specific.

That is your right, of course. I'm gonna go ahead and trust my own eyes. I'm not demanding that anyone believe me. I DVR'd and watched these games repeatedly, specifically the NT spot. I wouldn't hold such a strong stance on this if there were any doubt in my mind. Now can he get better? I can't say absolutely no... but I do think he has hit his ceiling, and that ceiling is still not good enough. The fact that he gets these types of props are really indicative of how few really analyze his game. All they remember is the few decent plays a game he makes... while somehow forgetting the rest where he gets shoved off the LOS or stood up and useless in pushing the pocket.

That's quite the surprise. I'm glad to hear it from Niner players. I guess we really don't need a nose tackle.

If you want to see a real nose tackle in Action go back and watch the games when Michael Carter played NT. He was an awesome nose tackle for the 49ers in their glory days. He occupied so much space it wasn't even funny.

Ok, oldman you have your opinion and you gave it. Both Spikes and Ulbrich stated theirs.
You and they do not agree.
No insult is meant, but I give more credence to the opinions of Spikes and Ulbirch than I give to yours.

They want to give guys like Haynesworth 100 million dollars to do the same job Franklin is capable of doing. I'm not saying Franklin is better then Haynesworth, but if you look at cost and effectiveness, Franklin is a gem. He is the fastest 315 pound man off the snap if he plays one gap. Stupid Nolan wanted him to be like Haynesworth and play two gaps all day as well as rush the passer.
MANHANDLED the center. I like to hear TKO say that. He is a Vet.
I don't think haynesworth's body could handle the 2 gap in a 3-4. If the redskins go 3-4 it will be after this season when they fire the head coach again. Really though haynesworth is a great player but he's body hasn't been able to with stand a 4-3, what makes people think he could do it in a 3-4 and stay healthy.
