I think more is going on here than meets the eye. Something is happening behind the scenes. I doubt Shaun Hill finishes the season as starter if this keeps up!

It's funny, cause the one time that he had a decent line (2006) Smith actually had a somewhat decent season....

good run blocking line... awful pass protection though

In 2006, we gave up just 35 sacks. That put us right in the middle of the league.
That number pales in comparison to the recent numbers: 55 sacks in 2007, 55 sacks in 2008.

You should know better than to just use sack stats to speak on overall protection. All you did here is prove that Smith was good at getting rid of the ball when pressured. Can't just look at those sack totals to evaluate protection... watch the games, and remember them. Also, remember just how bad Kwame Harris was.

A difference of 20 sacks is a pretty substantial difference.
Say what you will about sacks as an indicator of O-lIne success, but even with a machine gun for an arm wouldn't have survived with that 07 line.

Seems that 2/3 of every nice pass play the Niners hit were called back because of Kwame. I am sure that is inflated but that is what it felt like.

That should build up some good chemistry, which he also had with Jones in TC
Those two, along with Morgan are the future of this team at WR
Hope all 4 of em are playing well soon
Im not saying Smith will be the savior at QB
how fast he can run or how hard he can throw wont matter if he
continues to be scared to throw the ball
But to echo what has been said, Hill is not cutting it, his noodle arm, poor footwork, lack of poise and inabilty to read defenses is apparent

Smith did have some great throws/plays that Kwame ruined.

Granted, that while line play can not be deduced from sack numbers alone, they are good indicators of how well the line is performing.

Not worth it bro. These are the same people that were hiding in the closet with their Alex Smith jerseys, just waiting for Hill to fail so that they could come out with the pitch forks and baseball bats.
Where was this thread when Hill drove us down the field IN Arizona for the gamewinning touchdown ? Or when he lit Seattle's defense up with his ARM to burn 9 minutes in the second half of Week 2 ? Or when he torched Minnesota's top notch defense to give us the go ahead TD in week 3 ?
I didnt see one "bench Hill", "start Alex", etc. threads during those 3 weeks. Now, the reality is that DURING those 3 weeks, the theme has always been the same......FIRE RAYE. It was apparent from the start that the playcalling was horrendous, and that Raye was setting us up for disaster by depending on the defense too much. Well, it finally backfired. First, we got a taste with Favre's last minute TD, and then Atlanta wiped us off the map.
I love Niner fans. Inconsistency at its finest. No one had any problems with Hill at the end op last year, or the beginning of this year; he plays crappy for one week, and they ACTUALLY want Alex Smith.....yes the same bust Alex Smith...in at starter because he looked good in practice ?
Hell, even I admit that Hill is not the future, but putting Alex in at QB is giving up on the season........

I've been complaining about Hill for a long time now. I've never felt that he has the arm to be a full-time starter. And, I've felt that Smith is a lousy quarterback for just as long.
The problem I have and the reason I have been bashing Captain Wounded Duck is because the hypocrisy of these boards. Every single excuse people gave about Smith is coming out with Hill now. And, the sad part is Hill has been in the league longer than Smith, so you'd expect him to have a better grasp of the game.
But, Hill is the people's choice right now. It's cool to like him, and if you say something negative about him, you get flamed here.
So goes the 'Zone.
