Only Three Roster Spots Open?

Shop Find 49ers gear online
From Bee-rows' blog entry today: "The way I see it, 50 roster spots are locked up heading into training camp, leaving three up for grabs for enterprising young players."

Granted it is still early.

Granted this is MB's opinion.

However, to me, the very idea that the 49ers only have THREE spots open for final roster competition at this point is encouraging and a testament to the depth that our team has now compared to years' past.

As long as Simms and Roman are not on the 53 man roster I will be happy.
He didn't even list Ziegler as someone to watch....hmmm
Agreed that is a very good sign. As I was trying to say in the Huard kicked our ass in '06 thread that got locked up. Look at the starters and backups from that game (especially at the skilled positions) and look at who we have taking those spots now. ie Antonio Bryant, Bryan Gilmore, Arnaz Battle and Taylor Jacobs were our top 4 WRs on the depth chart. Only Bryant is an NFL starter today.

and thats only one example of one position

We didn't improve the DL, so absence of competition is not a good thing.

Who backs up Goldson if we don't have Roman?
"Keep an eye on... QB Davis, S Lewis Baker, S Curtis Taylor, RB Kory Sheets, RB Thomas Clayton, T Alex Boone, T Barry Sims, LB Mark Washington, LB Justin Roland, WR Michael Spurlock, WR Maurice Price."

-- Matt Barrows

Only three positions left for all these guys. That's a shame because I sure see more than three players I'd like to keep. Of this list, I'd like to keep Davis, Baker, Taylor, Sheets, Boone, Washington and Spurlock. I can imagine them being able to sneak Taylor, Sheets, Boone and Spurlock onto the PS, but I'm not sure. Sheets and Boone could definitely be grabbed.

we can put Balmer back there and I bet he can perform better than Roman

We added Evans.

Balmer has another year under his belt and, by all accounts, looks much improved.

I'd call those two things improvement.

Oh come on now. That's so ridiculous that it's painful.

I hope you posted that facetiously.

Out of those players on the bubble, I'm rooting for Boone, Sheets, and Davis. I just have a feeling Davis might easily get picked up by another team if he goes to the practice squad.

Reggie Smith...and this is highly doubtful but Curtis Taylor would back up Michael Lewis. But i think Taylor lands on the PS imo
