After minicamp some of the reporters picked up on the fact that I’ve put on some weight. It wasn’t a focus of mine and I don’t think it will ever be a focus of mine. If it happens, it happens. Yes, I have gained a little bit of weight. But I won’t gain so much to where it hinders me. Once I start to see my performance drop, I have to start slimming down. That might be tough for me, because I love food. I love sweets and I love snacks.
As a matter of fact, I’m eating M&M’s right now!

Feel free to temper your enthusiasm about Manny's weight gain and how he's going to become a force as a pass-rusher.
lol, how can anyone come to a conclusion based on that. It doesn't even say in that excerpt wether he gained muscle or fat or both. And a person can have m&ms and still not be fat.
And as one poster mentioned, Bee-rows and Maiocco mentioned the he seems to have gained some muscle mass.
What conclusion? I just said "temper your enthusiasm"... as in... dont get too excited about the weight gain since Manny himself says "it wasn't a focus of mine"...

so were supposed to be upset that a pass rushing LB is heavier than usual??
people were calling him too skinny to be a DE when he got drafted. make up your minds. a little weight gain at any NFL defensive position outside CB is perfectly acceptable unless youre Gilbert Brown.
Upset? I guess you can be upset if you want.
Personally, I was one of the people that read what Barrows/Maiocco blog about Lawson's weight gain and now after reading his own comments about how it wasn't his focus in the offseason I'm a little less enthusiastic. That's all.

Two things: 1. Manny Lawson has a great sense of humor. 2. There has been a lot written about the new Niners off-season weight and strength-training regimen. They've evidently got a new guy and the players are liking his program because it's challenging. A number of players have added muscle mass. There was an article about how much Balmer has added.
I'm guessing Lawson actually HAS added muscle weight. I'm guessing he's serious enough about his career to not waste his time sitting around stuffing his pie hole with junk food. Something tells me there's not a lot of Cheetos eating with Singletary stalking around the building. So I wouldn't get to worried about his little offhand comment.

I wasn't thrilled with his comments either. When I first heard about his weight gain, I thought he had bulked up in muscle or something. Then I read this today and its evident its probably mostly fat. How is a guy making millions, who is considered a professional athlete, letting his body go like that? Where is the self motivation?
There was a picture of him and the Niners held that mini camp before the draft. He looks solid and it's not fat at all.
So you read that he likes sweets and immediately thought that he gained fat?

“I went back home right after the season, but I didn’t exactly do too much when I got there.”…
“Usually when I go back home, I love to eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.”…”If you give me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a glass of milk, and leave me to watch cartoons – I am good.”
“That’s pretty much the gist of what I did while I was back home this offseason.”
“After minicamp some of the reporters picked up on the fact that I’ve put on some weight. It wasn’t a focus of mine and I don’t think it will ever be a focus of mine. If it happens, it happens. “Right now my daily schedule goes like this:
I work out early in the morning, come back to the house, get something to eat, lay down, take a nap, get up, watch some movies, chill, and then I get on my X-Box and play some video games.”

This is how he described his offseason. Tell me this sounds like a guy who is working on building muscle mass and watching his weight. What am I missing?
Let me be the one to apologize on behalf of Manny Lawson for taking a break during the OFFSEASON. It's the offseason man, relax. It's a time for the players to rest their bodies. They attend appropriate workouts but they don't over do it because it could lead to an injury. That's what a strength and conditioning coach is for once training camp starts.
So relax. Manny Lawson will be just fine.

Lol some of you are ridiculous with the way you jump to conclusions.
Let me get this straight...Weight gain + eating M&Ms = Fat?
First off, it's not like this is the only thing he is eating. Second, I would rather him gain weight from snacks than roids. Maybe it's just me.

Yeah. This is just getting crazy. I don't know how much more of this I can take. I almost to the point that I would rather spend my time spanking my monkey with a cheese grater.

i inferred that you meant he won't be a presence in pass rush (or anything) because he gained some weight.

Yeah, I've seen so many knocks on his as a bust because he hasn't developed into a pass rusher...but I've educated many mocksters that he's a terrific all-around OLB. The most important factor is he's 100% healthy again...besides, we have other pass rushers. I'm expecting Haralson to be in double digits this year...I'm waiting for Manusky to unleash Ahmad Brooks...he's a beast-in-waiting. Also like the Marquis Harris addition...he's coming from the 'Bolts, so Manusky knows his capabilities. Another thing many don't understand is our DL will have to play better and more consistently so the OLB's can make more plays. The addition of Evans and Jean-Francois, development of Balmer and Sopoaga back in the NT rotation w/Franklin should help. KB has lowered his body fat by 4% during the off-season...and that's no small feat. His hard work should pay off...especially w/Evans there to be a veteran mentor.

I'm all for the weight gain if it is extra muscles. He could stand to get bigger so he won't get thrown around as much in the pass rush.

Yes sir there certainly are,I am considering saying screw the warning % and start busting some of these drama queens balls. If some of these guys actually believe the s**t they are saying, they are absolutely hopeless morons.Let's take a part of an article and read whatever outrageous conjecture into it that pops into our empty ass head so we can bash the team/coaches/players/owners because that is what truly makes us a fan...

In the months before last season, there was a video of Manusky coaching defense that featured a scene where Manny Lawson does a practice speed rush around the outside. I wonder if any of you remember the video or even still have it saved. Lawson is so violently, unbelievably fast getting around the tackle and to the point Manusky needs him to be that it's almost scary. I remember thinking that if they would just let Lawson work on that, he could be a real threat as a pass rusher. The guy is seriously quick.
Now, I read this weekend that the team is "through tinkering with Lawson" and they're going to just let him go for it with the QB as much as possible. I think this is a very exciting turn of events and I can't wait to see Lawson and Haralson this year - they both may put on a show for us.

I can see it now... I'm gonna be that annoying guy repeating himself in countless threads with this...
" Manny and Parys can run the arc, damn it! They just need some inside push/penetration to keep the QB from stepping in and beyond them!!! "

Yeah, I remember there being no push inside many times.
