49ers SS Michael Lewis restructured his contract, taking a paycut and wiping out the final two years.
Lewis' 2010 salary drops from $4.1 million to $1.7 million plus $400,000 in bonus money. Lewis will hit free agency next year, but this was going to be his last season in San Francisco regardless. Taylor Mays was drafted as the long-term solution, and Reggie Smith is also emerging as a starting-caliber safety.

Wow, classy move on Lewis' part. Reminds me of the pay cut Ulbrich took when his LB role was diminished and he was mainly a ST player. Not to mention A. Smith took a pay cut, too (which could increase if he has a great season). Team players...

If by kind you mean, he understood when he was told, "if you want to play this year, you need to take a paycut" then yes, it was.

its definitely good, for us, to save that money, but I can't help but feel bad for a player with his concussion history being forced to make such concessions when he's obviously already a team-first guy who has put himself on the line for his teammates throughout his career.
I hope the next CBA includes greater protections, both physically and financially, for current and former players.
