Best regular season game.

I may not have the facts straight, it was a long time ago.

1989 against the Eagles in Philly. The Eagles dominated in the 1st 3 quarters and were leading, by like 21 - 10 or something. They had sacked Joe 8 times. In the 4th Quarter Joe goes off on them, throws 4 TDs and we win!!

Fixed it for for you. Awesome game!
One of my favorite regular-season games was when the Rams were leading by quite a bit coming up to halftime and Georgia Frontieri came down and started partying with the players and coaches on the sideline. I thought, WTF?, there's still another half to play.

And, wouldn't you know it - Montana and John Taylor burned them with two plus-90 yard TD's in the second half to send them home losers. The look on Frontieri's face after the game was priceless.
1980 Coming back from 35-7 in OT to beat New Orleans one of the coldest days ever at the stick left at halftime and listened to the game on radio as the Niners came back, OUCH.

1981 First meeting with Cowboys beat them 45-14 previous year had beat us 59-14 in Dallas. The Cowboys laughed in our faces the whole time. When they knocked out Hofer Cowboy fans cheered it was disgusting. Started 5 game winning streak and made Niners legit. FYI.. ABC would not show highlights of game next day on MNF which had Walsh very p**sed off. Back in the day was very big deal to make MNF highlights.

1981 NFC Championship game – Over came 6 turnovers for “The Catch” nough said.

1981 SB our first, great first half, incredible stand and Bunz tackle of Alexander will live forever

1984 SB all the talk was about Marino. East coast media didn’t give us a chance forgot had Montana, 3rd highest rated defense and we had gone 15-1 missing perfect season due to missed field goal.

1989 Niners vs. Rams: John Taylor 286 total yards helping launch a MNF come from behind victory in LA

1989 NFC Champ game Niners vs. Rams watching Jim Everett falling down with no one around him and taking a sack is a priceless memory. Lott covering 40+ yards to break up a sure TD catch.

1989 SB against Cincy and “The Drive”. Horrible game up until "The Drive” and Montana famous John Candy moment.

1994 NFC champ game 49ers and Cowboys finally beat the boys and Young gets the monkey off his back in SB

2002 playoff game against Giants and the come from behind victory Garcia put together.

Honorable mention

Playoff game against Bears in Chicago smacked them 28-3 supposedly we could not play in cold weather
TO catch against Packers in the playoffs
Any time we beat the Cowboys or Rams
no particular oder but these are my top 10:

1.88-89 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST THE BEARS.
2.2002 WILDCARD GAME AGAINST THE GIANTS
3.89 MNF GAME AGAINST THE RAMS
4.94-95 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AGAINST THE COWBOYS
5.88-89 SUPERBOWL AGAINST BENGALS
6.89-90 SUPERBOWL AGAINST DEN
7.94-95 SUPERBOWL AGAINST S.D.
8.the catch-II

9.I think it was the 95 season when Elvis Grbac lead the niners to a W against deion sanders and the cowturds in Texas Stadium.Sanders was running his mouth all week and Rice hit them with a 70 + yards TD reception on the second play of the game.

10.Owens big game against ATL in 2002 i think it was. He had what? almost 300 yards receiving in that game. That was a fun one for me.
1. 1994 NFC Championship
2. 1998 Wild Card over GB
3. 2002 Wild Card over NYG
4. 1995 reg. season win over DAL
5. 1997 MNF over DEN
5. SB29
6. SB24
7. SB23
8. 1994 reg. season win @ATL
9. 2003 reg. season win @PHI
10. 1998 opening day over NYJ
mine would be: ( not counting the Super wins---those are my 5 favorite)

1. 1981 NFC title game----the catch

2. 1989 MNF where the rams were winning then the Niners came back--two long TD catch and runs by John Taylor.

3. The game in Cinncinnati where the bengals didn't run out the clock giving the Niners one last throw-- a Montana to Rice TD to win it.

4. the Niners at eagles game in 1989 when the eagles were pummeling Montana but in the 4th qtr the Niners offense exploded to win 38-28.

5. the last game of the 1991 season on MNF when the Niners beat the Bears 52-14 to end the season and even though we didn't make the playoffs--we could have been the best team at the end of the season.

6. beating the Bears 28-3 in the 1988 NFC title games when it was really cold and the Bears came out in short sleeves to try and intimidate the Niners---nope!

7. Steve Youngs TD pass to TO to beat the packers 30-27 in the 97 or 98 playoffs.

8. Montana rallying the Niners from down 35-7 to beat the Saints in 1980--the start of you know something good is gonna happen with this team.

9. tie--the two brutal defensive battles on Monday night--one was a loss to the Bears 10-6 and the other was a 7-3 win over the Giants. Both results were reversed in the NFC title games later on ( 1988 and 1990) Niners beat the bears and Giants beat the Niners.

10. the game against the Vikings where Steve Young had that crazy long TD run to win it----1987 i think?

many other games--hard to remember them all!

I like this list...but I would include the game where Terrell Owens ran to the star in Dallas.
1. 49ers 28 v. Dallas 27 1981 NFC Championship
2. 49ers 38 v. Dallas 28 1994 NFC Championship
3. 49ers 13 v. Giants 15 1990 NFC Championship
4. 49ers 55 v. Denver 10 1989 Super Bowl
5. 49ers 20 v. Cincinnati 16 1988 Super Bowl
6. 49ers 26 v. Cincinnati 21 1981 Super Bowl
7. 49ers 38 v. Miami 16 1984 Super Bowl
8. 49ers 20 v. Dallas 30 1992 NFC Championship
9. 49ers 49 v. San Diego 26 1994 Super Bowl
10. 49ers 21 v. Dallas 14 1994 Regular Season

Dallas Cowboys 10 Greatest Games

So my question is this. If the NFL were to do a DVD set like this for the San Francisco 49ers, which games would you rank among the top 10 of all-time?

I think it is a given that the 5 Super Bowl games would need to be included. And I must add that it would be sick to have these complete games on a professional quality DVD. Anyways, which games would you put into the remaining 5 slots and why?

Here are a couple that I would choose.

The Catch
The game that got the San Francisco 49ers dynasty going. Montana to Clark set everything in motion.

1998 Season NFC Wildcard Game
Young to Owens with 8 seconds left on the clock to lift the 49ers to a dramatic last second win over the Green Bay Packers.

2002 Season NFC Wildcard Game
Jeff Garcia leads the 49ers to a huge comeback win over the New York Giants.

Those are the more recent ones I can remember. Not sure what other games I might include as there are so many great ones. Maybe the 1994 Season NFC Championship?

The catch 2 was awesome, I can just remember the emotion on Owens face. The 2002 comeback against the giants imo was one of the greatest games I have seen SF play, the overall emotions that game made me and my buddies go through, from Owens early TD that smoked all of the giants secondary, to the last Fg that got us the win. Another of my top 10 would be that game we played at the stick against Philly, in 2001 if memory serves me correct, where we had that very tough goal-line stance where Derick smith picked off D-nab for the win. Philly had the ball in the goal-line for about 8 plays or so.
I really enjoyed the 2010 game vs the panthers where david carr threw an interception with 1 minute left, losing against a winless panthers team. Good times.

OH! The pain!!!

I cried after both these losses. Just a kid at the time. No less than about 20 Hall of Famers among these teams. Two of the greatest games in NFL history. I still see the '92 Championship aired too often for my liking on ESPN Classic.
1980 Niners vs. Saints – Down 35-7 at halftime Montana brings Niners back to win in OT 38-35.

1981 Niners vs Cowboys – taunted us in a humiliating loss in 1980 Niners destroy the Cowboys 45-14.

1981 NFC Championship Game Niners vs. Cowboys nothing more needs to be said.

1981 Super Bowl – Our first SB win a no name team, weird offense and QB with chicken legs. Niners have one of the greatest defensive goal line stands in the history of the SB.

1988 Niners vs. Rams – Graig scores 3 times his one run forever immortalized in a 24-21 win.

1988 Niners vs. Vikings – Young’s famous run against Vikings #1 defense.

1988 NFC Championship Niners vs. Bears with wind chill was 26 degree below zero. Everyone said Bears 46 defense would eat us alive we won 28-3 in Chicago

1989 Niners vs. Rams – Taylor takes a punt 96 yards and catches a slant and goes 92 yards as Niners come back to beat the Rams in Anaheim.

1994 NFC Championship against the Cowboys

1998 Wildcard Game Niners vs. Packers, Young to T.O. to win the game with 3 seconds left

#2 1988 season Superbowl - not greatest game but I've never been as happy at the end of a game

#3 1984 Superbowl.. Montana shows Marino who really IS the best

#4 1981 Superbowl Great first half - terrible 2nd but NINERS ARE CHAMPS

#5 1994 Superbowl Youngs redemption. DOMINANCE!!!!!!!!!

#6 1989 Superbowl 2 in a row for first time.. Best team Niners ever had

#7 1988 Season - NFC title game.. go into Chicago in below freezing temps and dominate the favored Bears

#8 SF-Cincy reg season - Bill Walsh skipping off the field game

#9 WIld Card SF over GB FINALLY! TO doesnt drop the big one

#10 1994 season NFC title game DALLAS IS DETHRONED!

Basically all of these, I'd say. Maybe not in this order, but the games, probably.
Not sure if that SF Cincy game is the one where Young put the team on his back, with a torn groin and everything, and willed the team to 28-21 win after being down 21-0 at halftime, limping in with the game-winning run for a touchdown.

All great games listed by posters, IMO.

I'll go the opposite.

I dont think Ive felt more depressed than the loss at Candlestick in 1997 against the Packers (NFC Champ). I was so sure that EddieD. had built that team specifically to overcome Favre's Packers (kind of like he did with the 94 squad for Dallas). But yet again, Holmgren drew up the perfect gameplan against us.

Took me a LONG time to overcome that one.
