This new design makes a lot of sense. An outer layer that deforms slightly on impact, much like a bumper on a car, to absorb a larger portion of the blow. Inside that is a "reaction layer" that collapses on impact to further absorb shock. Inside that is a very thin hard shell, much like current helmets, that protects the skull from fracture. Inside that is the usual customizable layer like current helmets.

Having spent a fair amount of hobby time working with carbon fiber race car shells, this new helmet tech sounds good. Football at all levels needs better head protection if the sport is to survive.

Pretty compelling at 1:32 mark in the video.
Will be used by a number of teams this fall. Including SF, hopefully.
If this helmet proves itself, then it should be mandatory. Riddell should jump in and help mass produce this for all levels of football.

There was also this neck strap thing that was supposed to brace the brain; similar to how a wood pecker braces it's brain. Whatever happened to that.

Also, shouldn't contact football be outlawed for any child under 14 years of age (high school age)?
very cool. About time something other than vents came to helmets

About time they made advancements in this area. I don't care how it looks or sounds, just make it safer for the players.

Yes, absolutely. We just need to convince parents and thousands of paid Pop Warner coaches of it.

Case in point: A few years ago a good friend of mine was an orthopedic surgeon. There was a very large PW football program in the area, run in part by the head coach of a large HS football team. The HS team was named Tigers. The associated PW team was the Bobcats. My friend, who was adamantly opposed to tackle football below the age of 13, had performed many surgeries on PW players. He was a bit anal so he kept accounting of how much he was paid for his services by players from the Pop Warner league. With those funds, he added a 20x40' man cave to his home. In it he had all the latest tech gadgets, a pro pool table, theatre seating for the sound and movie system, etc. He called his man cave, The Bobcat Room. Whenever anyone would ask him about his feelings on kids playing tackle football, he would invite them to come over for a game of pool or watch a movie or just hang out. He made his point very well.

I notice from the VICIS website that they will be donating helmets to needy situations that could not otherwise afford them.

All it takes is one tech breakthrough of this sort to force all the other manufacturers to follow. It looks like VICIS has some patents on some of their product so they will either dominate the market or be paid by others to use the technology. In any case, this is good news for the game.

I'm sure a lot of people will go back and see the movie Concussion. Very compelling.
There will never be a helmet that can protect any brain from concussions and CTE as long as tackling occurs. It's not just about concussions. The head was not meant to be impacted and brain jostled as regularly and frequently as occurs when playing football from youth to pros. The sport needs to change significantly and evolve into a safer game. This means tackling needs to be redefined and we can still keep helmets. Instead of tackling, it should be wrapping up and pulling the player down, not pushing, not slamming, not tripping, not spearing, not crashing, not leading with the helmet, not anything else. Everyone should be running and should be running into arms or body to body at the point of impact. It's not that complicated.

then it won't be football, high speed impacts are a part of playing the game at full speed. 1 yard line, game on the line, give it to your back...... defense should try to wrap up and pull him down to the ground

no, they are going to go balls out trying to lay the hammer down on that b***h

NFL players should not be allowed to work out or take any kind of supplement. In fact NFL players should look like this so the game is safer.
