Back in 1956 a young Dan Rooney caught passes from rookie QB in training camp. He begged his father to keep this kid, but the coach had other ideas and let him go. That rookie was Johnny Unitas.

For the better part of the past 40+ years the Steelers organization has been one of the premiere organizations in the NFL. Dan Rooney played his part in building and earning that reputation. Don't like the Steelers, but I sure as hell respect them. Sad day for the NFL.

One of the only reasons I didn't hate when the Steelers got their 6th ring. Best owner ever. Not even a arguement to be had about it.

Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney passed away today at the age of 84. Head to Behind the Steel Curtain our SBN Steelers blog for coverage of the remembrance and special pieces there of a life well-lived. Rooney was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Kathleen and Pittsburgh Steelers' owner Art Rooney. In the Steelers organization, Rooney was involved in many aspects of the franchise from the time he was a young boy, often assisting his father at Pitt Stadium and Forbes Field. He grew up in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh and attended North Catholic High School where he excelled as the team's quarterback. He was also the coach for the St. Peter's Elementary school football team, which was quarterbacked by future CIA Director and lifelong friend Michael Hayden. Rooney was mentored by Fran Fogerty, Joe Carr, and Ed Kiely. These men assisted in teaching Dan the business of football. After being mentored and graduating from Duquesne University he knew football was what he wanted to pursue. He then met his future wife in the office of the Steelers where she was currently working. The couple got married soon after. By early 1969, Rooney was managing the day-to-day operations of the team and personally selected the coaching hire of Chuck Noll

I'm really jealous how the Steeler organization was run under Dan Rooney. They stuck with their head coaches through bad times and didn't fire them after a mediocre season just so they can "start fresh" again. I admire the loyalty they gave them and wish the 49ers would do the same.
