I know NE is known for making bold trades like this, but trading a productive 26 year old pass rusher is a head scratcher.
Cause they need as much protection for Brady as they can get.
And not liking AZ getting a good pass rusher either...
Well that's not true.
He's saying he doesn't like AZ getting a good pass rusher.
Chandler Jones is a very good pass rusher. He's not liking that AZ got him.

Maybe Belichick is trying everything to prolong Brady's playing days.
From what I have heard, they have 3-4 other players they want to re-sign, and they weren't going to be able to afford Jones.
What is going to be interesting is that the Cardinals cap space isn't getting any better, so I don't think they'll be able to sign Jones after this year either. I can appreciate that they're going all in, but they gave up a second rounder for what could be a one year rental.
This plus the fact that the market value for a guy like him went way up with a guy like Vernon getting crazy money. Jones also had a little off the field incident in January, perhaps the Pats know more about his off the field habits then the rest of the league and media is aware.

Jones doesn't quite have the skillset of a guy like Aldon Smith. Jones tends to be a longer more technical rusher with a good mix of pass rush moves, but doesn't quite have the same kind of quick twitch and bend ability of a guy like Aldon. He's a high sack guy, medium disruption guy whereas Aldon was both a high sack high disruption guy. He'll get 10-12 sacks a season, but he didn't come across as the best guy on the Pats defense, more like 4th or 5th best.

Yeah I'm sure Cooper was the deal breaker. He's about as decent as Marcus Martin.
Cooper was a top 10 pick that was considered one of the best guards ever drafted out of college. He's probably a better fit for New England's blocking scheme. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him thrive with the Patriots.
Belly knows it's too early to give up on an OG that was ranked top 10 coming out.. it's only a broken leg, if he can stay healthy, it's already a WIN trade for the Patriots.. plus, there are time that those pass ruhing LB only do well with the Patriots... I remember when we sign Banta Cain and his all hype athletecism, he did nothing to our defense but take a poof...
the question here is that, would this trade been better for us had we offered them Boone (last year) and that 2nd rounder??

Cooper reminds me a lot of us acquiring Glenn Dorsey. We targeted him as a buy-low candidate with a high ceiling. Dorsey was the #5 overall pick in his draft, Cooper was #7 overall in his.
The Patriots could've played this one of two ways:
1) keep Jones for 2016; let him walk after 2016, and pick up a compensation pick (probably a 2018 3rd?)
2) trade Jones; add Long to replace him, take a gamble on a high-risk guy like Cooper, and pick up a 2016 2nd round pick
Collectively, I think the 2nd move looks like a pretty good bet. Especially because with Brady being so old (38), their window is closing. A 2016 draft pick helps them a lot more than a 2018 one.
Belichick reminds me a lot of Billy Beane: neither is afraid to trade a player early. Or, it's a lot like Bill Walsh used to say: "Get rid of a player a year early rather than a year late".

The Patriots were probably thinking about the cash it would have taken to bring Jones back ...this way they get quality protection for Tom, and a much valued draft pick ...Goddamn Beli-Cheat won this one IMO

Hard to say that. Jones production isn't going to be easily replaced. And we all know what happens when you can't pressure the opposing qb. Not to mention Cooper hasn't been that great of a player. Gotta see who they draft and how he turns out.
