Love the pick. Insurance incase Iupati leaves. PUP for '14.
We had to have him. Iupati still on the mend, and Snyder at backup kills us. Just ask OND. You never can have too many really good OLs.

This pick has the added benefit of not taking a spot on the 53, while not being available for waivers... this is the genius of the Comp. Pick --> Injured Reserve combo that Baalke and company love.

This. Tore his ACL in April.
Thomas will be IR'd the whole season. This means that this year won't "count" as a year on his contract, and we'll still get four years outta him.

After 2014, the 49ers are going to let Iupati walk. He'll get a massive contract, which means we'll end up getting a 3rd-or-4th round pick as compensation. Thomas will, in my estimation, take over as the starting left guard in place of Iupati.

Really like this pick. Totally in the Carradine/Lattimore mold. This was a luxury pick, made possible by the fact that: a) we have a loaded roster, and b) Baalke always stockpiles extra picks.
What's the scouting report on this guy? All I know is he injured himself at a workout with an nfl team. What were they saying about this guy before the injury?

OG
Brandon Thomas
Height 6-3
Weight 315
San Francisco 49ers

40 Yrd Dash 5.06
10 Yrd Dash 1.82
Bench 35
Vertical 29
Broad 0802 Pro day 0803
20 Yrd Shuttle 4.83 Pro Day 4.75
3-Cone Drill 8.13 Pro day 7.83

Three-year starter who played tackle (two-time first-team All-ACC at LT). Held his own against Jadeveon Clowney without help.

The very first thing that jumps off the field at me is the NFL-caliber power in Thomas' hands and his punch.

The most impressive work Thomas does is as a run blocker. Tajh Boyd and the stable of Tigers back had much success running behind Thomas on the left side. He drives defenders at the line of scrimmage to make big holes. He also climbs to the second level and springs long runs with timely blocks on linebackers. Thomas does it all with a bully's mentality, throwing forearm shivers into defenders and finishing with frequent pancake blocks.

Plays with natural leverage as a shorter offensive lineman, difficult for defenders to get under his pads…Bends at the knees and not at the waist, flexible body type…Immense balance as a blocker, keeps his feet and leverage while engaged…Impressive length with 34 arms despite lack of height…Extends hands to the frame of defenders, places well to not let his hands get outside the frame, almost never holds…Generates power from his upper body, strong hands…Calm feet in hic kickslide with patience to let rushers show their hand…Creates acres of space as a down blocker, caves defensive linemen with ease…Doesn't stop moving his feet on contact, always driving defenders…Dominant run blocker when he climbs to the second level, makes a lot of key blocks…Consistently delivers a heavy blow with his hands on first contact…Positionally-aware run blocker, works to upfield shoulder and forces defenders to chase from behind…Nasty finisher of blocks, no stranger to pancakes.

Rookie contracts in the CBA as far as I know. Especially if they are drafted injured and do not play for the entire season do not receive an accrued season, for the deal and for years until unrestricted free agency becomes a possibility.

Thomas' and Reaser's 4 year rookie deal is a 5 year with 2014 being a rehab year

Same with Carradine and Lattimore -- 2013 as recovery year and their contracts really take affect this year.

I'm hoping IR so he'll be a RFA at the end of his contract.

Lattimore? Yes. Carradine? No. Since Tank was on the active roster he has 1 year under his belt already.
