the nfl should be embarassed

with the performance of gene sterratore and his crew....first of all im not blaiming them for the loss...they missed a all time great play by bowman but niners forced fumble....the running into the kicker penalty had more of an impact on the game as it denied niners a chance to move the ball downfield and gave seattle great field position and they scored (niners should have stopped them--so they cant really complain)

the embarassment comes from this being, supposedly one of their top crews and all of them miss bowman swiping the ball

and they dont know their own rule book, as to the fact that hittting the punters plant leg is roughing not running into the kicker, as mike perreria pointed out...damn, andy lee's ankle bent under the pressure exerted by the seahawk player...im sure pete carroll gladly trades a 5 yard penalty for taking out a pro bowl punter, even if he did have a bad game

i would be making this post if it happened in the bronco ats game, it is just an embarassment to a great game...and it is not the first embarassing game for the refs...jerome boger and his crew last superbowl, allowing cary williams o hit a ref, allowing bruce miller to be held on jones kickoff return for td and then not throwing a flag when all ravens players deliberately hold on their last punt.. again ravens were better team and beat niners regardless of refs, it is just embaraasing rodger goodall..to quote chris carter "cmon man"
The NFL should be embarrassed, but not just because of this game. The officiating has been atrocious all year. But what they should really be embarrassed about is the pathetic rules they've installed which ruin the integrity of the sport. It is becoming a joke.

BTW, the Ravens were not the better team last year. That's a different argument, though.

Fans that continually complain about the officiating are the ones who should be embarrassed. You have 7 guys watching 22 that are going full speed at field level, there will be mistakes. They all balance out, the officials are not determining the outcome of games the way many of you biased homers think. If the NFL really cared who won a team with a small following like the Seahawks would not be in the Super Bowl.

Not acceptable in the most highest level of the sport, especially in a championship game.

There are mistakes, like missed holding or a bad spot, but the two plays stated above are play called are play that involve the ball. Bowman ripped the ball out clearly and there was no pile up or anything. Nobody is watching the f**kig ball carrier?

No one was watching Andy lee punt the f**king ball and a guy run into the plant leg? Or was it that they didn't even know the damn rule? Either way, like the OP said, not really blaming this loss on refs, but C'MoN MAN!

Officiating this year was worse than I've ever seen. Is it that hard to just maintain referee competency? The quality of the NFL's product is watered down and compromised by these officials. The league is taking the "Justice is blind" idiom way too literally.

They got cocky when they got their raise. Now they just coast through games hitting their quota on some bad calls while missing a bunch in the process. Its a job to them wat do they care? There is no consequence for f**king up.
It's true. The quality of officiating has really gone down in recent years. It's even worse now than it was before replay was implemented.

The game is over regulated. Too much is being asked of these officials. They are being asked to micro-manage the game to the point of absurdity. In any job, when you have too much on your plate, your entire overall performance suffers.

It also boggles the mind why plays like Bowman's fumble recovery, hits to the head, and other crucial plays are not reviewable. Just let the teams use one of their challenges on it. It doesn't slow the game down at all. Those challenges are likely to be used during the course of a game anyways. This league is allergic to common sense.

that is a load of crap. Yes officials make mistakes, so make it right. You call TWO unnecessarys on the Niners and you are telling me nobody else on the crew advised the others, hey we have hit the Niners with two very ticky tack calls, lets pay attention to seattle now.

Rewatch the game if you really need to, if you can't find at least 2 plays were a seahawk did just the same as Rogers or Whitner you just are not looking. MAKE IT RIGHT NFL. And please explain to me why EVERYTHING is not reviewable NFL? Seriously, why can't a HC force a ref to look again in slow motion.

Hell, if we could challenge helmet to helmet calls we are playing at home yesterday....because we probably would have beat NO and we probably would have beat SEA yesterday.

As for things balancing out, yes it all balances out, but variance dictates that timeline. Did it all balance out in that game? I don't think so. The 2013 season for the Niners? Nope, try again. Sure maybe if you took a sample size of like a decade it all balances out but that is meaningless.

It did not balance out for the Seahawks last time they were in a Superbowl, so are 2013 Niners fans suppose to pay for that.

Sorry but the all balancing out argument is weak

Maybe the NFL should put helmet cams on the refs so fans can see the difference between their view and the ones you get from your couch. If you want the games called better they could do any one of 3 things. Take the subjectivity out of some of the judgement calls, you could do that by rolling back the definitions of offensive and defensive holding, and pass interference to the standard of decades gone by. That will hurt the offense and nobody likes 14-10 games anymore. You could review all penalties that will make games last an hour longer and nobody wants that. You could call penalties from up in the booth, that would really slow the game down. The current system may be flawed but it is better than the alternatives.

These days they can put a camera on every player and have a ref monitor each of those and buzz in penalties. It wouldn't be hard to do in this day and age. It would completely be on point.

bob s i can understand that they are not going to see something happen on occasion..but they should know the rules...the plant leg is roughing...
maybe staerratore needs to stop refereeing college hoops games when he is working a chapionship game
Their incompetence is unacceptable and should be scrutinized.

when every form or replay is avaialbe and they stress getting it right for these types of games yet they refuse to do anything about it.
The new rules make it impossible to officiate...

I have an idea, how about you make a better helmet that can sustain a helmet to helmet hit without causing a concussion? The technology does exist, but apparently, it's cheaper to just change the rules and keep using that good ole 60's technology.
